TTS in other languages?

Hi all,

This is a long shot but I hope somebody has a clue on this.

So my dad said that he wants to get a GPS but he doesn't really understand English, so I thought about giving him my current Garmin. It already has the Chinese GUI and a basic Cantonese voice but he wants it to say the street names too. Is there a Cantonese TTS voice that's compatible with the Garmin?

I should clarify that the only part of the speech that can be in English is the street name but the rest need to be in Cantonese.

Thanks

Would Garmin Voice Studio be any help??

From Garmin's description: "If you prefer to let your friends or loved ones guide you in your next adventure, instead of the preloaded voice on your nüvi, then Garmin Voice Studio is the answer for you.

Garmin Voice Studio lets you create custom voices for your nüvi. With just a microphone (recommended) and your computer, you can record and upload custom voices to your device. The software guides you through the process of recording a list of words and phrases and downloading the recordings to your device."

It's available free at their web site. Check out the tab labeled "Installation Instructions" to see how it works.

Thanks for the suggestion. I

Thanks for the suggestion. I looked into it a little closer and it does state that it doesn't provide TTS recordings.

Wǒ mí lù le!

Excuse my ignorance but I'm curious.

How one does gets a drivers license if you don't know the country's language?

How do you get around driving if all the streets and roads signs are in English?

When I came to the states back in the early 60s I too lived in Philly and had to learn enough English to pass the license test, I guess things are much different now.

He's fine with Philly

He's fine with Philly because he recognizes the street names but he's ignorant to everything outside of Philly.

His only requirement for the GPS is that it has to be entirely Chinese... I'm trying to meet him halfway with it but he's a PITA

i miss philly chinatown

I did a simulation in my 2460 using Cantonese language and all the directional turns are in Cantonese but the unit just doesn't speak the streets names in either language, he will have to pay attention to the turn commands and guess the street name where the turn is to be made by watching the screen. (distraction not recommended)

I only did the voice so I don't know how the unit will behave if the text and keyboard was changed.

not missing much

Philly Chinatown hasn't changed much with the exception that the Convention center is probably 3x larger than it was before.

Yea, you can actually change the interface to display in Chinese and I already have the Mandarin/Cantonese languages installed like you did, but those aren't Text-to-Speech libraries. I wasn't sure if a TTS library exists so I figured I'd ask everybody here. Thanks for testing though.

missing the food

Haven't found a real Chinese restaurant in this area like we had in Philly, most here are buffet style with reheated food.

I agree the TTS in the units we have are not what you need because it is missing the streets and roads names, if would be nice if it could give the directional commands in a foreign language plus the streets and roads names in English.

Contact Garmin

I heard somewhere that Garmin does have the TTS files but they load them with the Country that the GPS is being sold in.

You might want to contact Garmin and see if thay have it (just like the TTS JILL) You might have to purchase it but I do belive that have it.

Good luck in your search...

Sin-Ji

Garmin does have a Cantonese TTS voice ( http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=5155), but there may be a problem. Definitely contact Garmin on this, but I believe in order to use it an Asian unit is required. The voices in Asian units aren't compatible with North American or European receivers.
