Please recomend a GPS to track teen

I would like to track my teen's car. Where he goes, if they speed, etc.

There are 2 types. Logging and live tracking.

I would love some recommendations.

I will trade my teenager for a GPS navigator BTW if anyone is interested.

A quick search . . .

using "gps tracking" sure brings up a LOT of web links to what you're looking for. Do you plan to let your teen know you're watching? Just wondering.

Don't waste ....

your money! Teenagers will do what teenagers will do, tracking or not! Can you imagine what they will think of their father if they find out what you are doing? News Flash: they are going to speed, they will go places you have said not to go, and not to mention, they will do in the care, alone together what a tracker cannot pick up, unless it's fitted with a recorder. Good luck, but supremely happy I am past that with my girls!

Don't all teenagers have a

Don't all teenagers have a cell phone with them 24/7? See if you can do what you want using a cell phone.

Of course I am telling my

Of course I am telling my teen the GPS will be installed. This comes after he was caught having sex in the car when he was supposed to be at school or various other places.

its more of a deterrent than anything. I also know I can not prevent anything if a teen put their mind to it.

its funny. I told me teen "don't go on to game sites on the internet until after you finish you homework...See this icon right here, this means I installed a keylogger that records your every website you go to." Yet he still gets in trouble for doing it.

Ughhh.

I rather keep this discussion off the debate whether or not I am going to do this as I am going to do it regardless.

I have come up with the same "google" lists as everyone else but want to know about actaul experience from people on various devices.

Thanks in advance

Trackstick

I have a Trackstick II from trackstick.com. It records everything from speed, altitude , stops, etc and I like it.
I use it on my vacations to remind me where I drove and walked. Was great on my vacation to Ireland. When done just plug into computer and Google Earth will show you the trip in increments you choose.

Look Into your Cell Phone System Capabilities

My cell carrier has options to track family members, and teens don't go anywhere without their cell phone. Get the right phone and cell plan and you should be all set.

When you are dead, you don’t know that you are dead. It is only difficult for the others. It is the same when you are stupid.

You might also want to block

You might also want to block phone use and texting while driving. It is available from my carrier for a couple bucks extra per month. To me, distracted teens are why teen accidents are up 10 fold from just a few years ago. I hope technology will prevent all drivers from texting and driving after I was almost hit last week by someone texting. Scary thing is the person didn't even know they almost ran me off the road, they were looking down texting when I went by. No one can safely text and drive and making it illegal is not helping, technology has to block the capability, which is sad that people don't get it.

Garmin makes this unit

Garmin makes this unit that will probably get the job done:

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=68084

Do other family members or loved ones of yours also need to be tracked?

If so, Garmin might give you a discount if you buy several of these units.

Before you do anything...

Look into whether there are any legal ramifications to what you are proposing.

Hey, in this day and age you just don't know! wink

Good luck!

I've got a free app on my Android phone called Glympse that I can use to allow people to track me. Good when you are going to someones house and don't want to be distracted on the phone etc. Don't have to have them calling 'where are you' when they can see it for themselves. Something like that might be a good bet. Also a good one on Android called My Tracks. Tell him he's to turn it on and if you lose contact he's grounded for a month.

Going through my fifth teenager (all step children) right now>>>

he is about to start driving. One thing I've learned...tracking won't stop them, lecturing won't stop them, pleading won't stop them...they are invincible...a padlock on the outside of their door and a leash may be the only real way and that makes your life barely worth living.

Blocking Drivers Cell Phone.. Too Many Problems

So OK, I'll ask. How does the carrier know the phone is being used while the users driving.. while the vehicle is parked motionless with the user behind the wheel.. while the phone owner is driving, but the phone is being operated by a passenger.. etc., etc.

Of course this brings up another interesting situation.

Do you really want to disable the phones use if it's the only way of communication in a emergency? How would you feel about yourself if, because of the blocked phone, someone died because of the inability to make a simple phone call..!!..?

If you can't trust your child to do what's right.. then you've got a lot more problems than them just using a phone inappropriately. rolleyes

Always on the Road Knowing where I've Been

Sorry to dig up old thread

"How does the carrier know the phone is being used while the users driving.."
Answer: Simple. All phones have a GPS chip and velocity can be measured with that data. If you have a smart phone you also have an accelerometer chip in addition to the GPS.

"while the vehicle is parked motionless with the user behind the wheel.. "
Answer:See above.

" while the phone owner is driving, but the phone is being operated by a passenger."
Answer: No way to know. I'd rather err on the side of safety and DISABLE the phone when moving faster than walking speed. Full voice control bluetooth could be an exception and texting should have no exceptions.

"Of course this brings up another interesting situation.

Do you really want to disable the phones use if it's the only way of communication in a emergency?"
Answer: In an emergency (read accident) your vehicle won't be moving. You can make a call.

" How would you feel about yourself if, because of the blocked phone, someone died because of the inability to make a simple phone call..!!..?"
Answer: This has been said to death by defenders of cell phone use while driving, movie theater goers who want to annoy other people, etc. People have short memory spans. People lived and dealt with those problems before cell phones existed and can do so today. People shouldn't be able to make a call or text while driving. Period razz

Things are different

Things are different now than when ours were teens. My two, girl and boy in their 40's, now find it amusing to tell me what they did when young.

I would have died if I knew it then but it is fun now.

Son, at 10 rode bike under highway in culvert.
Son, at 14, no license, when father let him take car *80 Malabu, to McDonald's a couple of blocks away, would go to Camp Bowie in Fort Worth (out of town) and street drag (he would have died from my hands if I knew that then)

If we had a GPS he would have been caught and we would not be enjoying these fun stories now.
(We did drag down River Oaks Blve, in front of the police station when we were young and wouldn't take for the memories now.)

Nuvi 2460LMT.

Not necessarily

The SPOT system doesn't report all that often, every 10 minutes MAX (I have a GSM-based tracking system that can report in every 20 seconds for my kids' cars) leading to the potential for HUGE errors through aliasing - the key is in how often the system gets a report from the device - if it reported once per hour, for example it is more than possible that they got into trouble a mile or three from the island and the wreckage floated in to the island with the tide. Once every 4 hours, then even more potential for errors.

Too bad they didn't have a proper on board marine GPS unit with a tracklog.

Currently have: SP3, GPSMAP 276c, Nuvi 760T, Nuvi 3790LMT, Zumo 660T

just live with it

Kids will be kids. Sit them down and actually have a conversation, not a lecture with them. Say you are treating them as adults and you expect that they will act like RESPONSIBLE adults. Say you won't go basaltic if something unfortunate happens, however they will be responsible for their actions and bare the consequences of those actions.

Then go and hope you have managed to make a serious impression upon them.
