Smart Phone news

Gee...

I was expecting to read something exciting. So Apple is 2nd to Android, Apple had a 4Q Christmas boost, Android had a 3Q pre-Christmas boost and Symbian and all other flavors are dying a slow death as expected. That was news-worthy. confused

Verizon removed useful search

Noticed that recently Verizon removed the feature on their website that allows subscribers to check if a cell phone number was part of the verizon network - the benefit being that calling numbers on the same network meant no use of minutes on those calls. Think it was the family and friends tab.
This feature has suddenly been removed.
Hmmm, wonder why??

Anyone know of an app that is able to check a phone's carrier?

Verizon

If you have a Verizon account you can see who else among your contacts is also a customer by going to their website and after signing in you can check Backup Assistant℠ Plus: Contacts
for those numbers that have the Verizon red check mark next to the number.

Also if you have a Verizon smart phone it will display the red Verizon check mark on the numbers that also subscribe.

I can't bring myself to pull the trigger, I'm cheap and can justify the smartphone even with my 25% monthly discount, maybe when the iPhone 5 is released later this year.

have to be signed up

Thanks, it seems one would already have to be signed up with back up assist and have those contacts already on the contacts list. However, it doesn't seem it would work for numbers who are not yet entered on the contact list.

Would be nice if there was an app to provide the feature.

.

Well, then sign up, and then backup. I don't see a problem here.

Et tu, Brutus?

There is no need to add anything to the contact list, once you sign up for the list FREE all you have to do is hit the import button and all the numbers stored in the phone are imported to the list, if I remember correctly when I set up my list (years ago) I set up a nightly sync at 1am with my phone and any new numbers added daily to the phone are automatically backed up every night.

Also in my daughter’s smartphone I can see who else has Verizon service by the red check mark next to the contact number.

P.S. The list also works in reverse order if you need to activate a new phone, just click on send list to phone.

smartphone does not indicate a red checkmark

My smartphone does not indicate a red checkmark by the contact numbers that are on VZ network. Maybe it has to do with the brand and model or a setting. I'll play with it for a bit and if that doesn't work, I'll call or visit Verizon. Thanks again for the pointers.

Not impressed with Smartphone GPS

Unless I have a larger screen smartphone, which Apple refuses to design, I find them all but useless. The only benefit is Google maps which indicates traffic conditions, somewhat. Still, the 4 inch screen is way to small for my needs. I have the Sygic Nav app installed on my Android. I dont use it, it is not userfriendly and it doesnt let me see what I want when I want.

The GPS chip is another issue for me. They must use old technology, maybe SIRF I or II. Acquisition times are long and reception is very poor unless you have a clear view of the sky. IMO, GPS in smartphones still have a long, long, long, way to go over the standalone GPS units.

I agree about the screen size

I agree with you about the screen size, although it can be better than no GPS at all, especially if you can get an app with live traffic reports.

I took a look at the Sygix app and decided that I would probably not find it satisfying for me, but the CoPilot Live USA app looks more appealing. FWIW, TomTom announced a few weeks ago that they are working on an Android app, although a release date was not given. It will be interesting to see what they do with an Android app, given their experience with standalone GPS units.

That does not agree with my personal experience. I find the reception at least as good as my standalone GPS unit, and the acquisition times visibly quicker. That may or may not be related to the model of phone that I have (an HTC Droid Incredible 2), as I have no experience with any other phone.

With best wishes,

Smart phone?

All phones are dumb, some just have more sophisticated technology. None will think for you. If you accept everything it does with out question then you are dumber than the phone sad

Which GPS are you using? All the stand alone GPS devices I've had only work in the landscape orientation mode which actually gives you a shorter road ahead view than an iPhone in the portrait orientation mode.

And, side by side in my car the iPhone using TomTom USA GPS software gets a GPS fix faster than My Nuvi 760.

My Garmin Nuvi 3790LMT switches from a Landscape map display to a Portrait map display automatically when I rotate the GPS unit.

Picked one of these up last week. Wow! It's not a phone. It's a multimedia device. I even got mobile TV with my plan.
