City Council has agreed to pay its red-light camera vendor at least $4.8 million in exchange for the company taking the cameras down within 60 days and dropping its breach of contract claim against the city.
The cameras have been off since August, when City Council outlawed them, but are still mounted in 50 intersections citywide. The council voted 13-4 in favor of the settlement with Scottsdale, Ariz.-based American Traffic Solutions, with council members C.O. Bradford, Helena Brown, Jack Christie and Mike Sullivan dissenting.
The city has about $3 million in hand from fines paid by red-light violators. It is counting on future collections to raise the rest of the money within three years.
