iPhone 5 and iPad 3

Well, there are many alleged stories popping up regarding the iPhone 5 and a release sometime later this year, around summer-ish.

Let's use this thread to compile notes.

Also, iPad 3 is getting more attention lately with a pending release. Rumors there are the iPad 3 will be getting 4G LTE data capability.

Looks like 4G LTE will be one of the big things in iPad and iPhone releases, to go along with the anticipated deployment of those services by the carriers.

TeliaSonera plans LTE expansion and VoLTE despite iPad snub
By Tammy Parker

The first operator in the world to launch LTE, Sweden's TeliaSonera, is lamenting the fact that Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) new LTE-equipped iPad will not support its LTE frequencies, but that isn't keeping the operator from touting a subscriber milestone and aggressive plans for Voice over LTE.
The new iPad is designed to provide LTE access at 700 MHz and 2.1 GHz, frequencies being used for LTE in the United States and Canada but reserved for 3G in Sweden and other parts of Europe. TeliaSonera became the first operator in the world to launch commercial LTE service when it switched on its networks in Stockholm and Oslo in December 2009 using the 2.6 GHz band.

Apple has said it will sell the new iPad in the Nordic region, but Thomas Jonsson of Telia-Sonera told news agency TT, "We don't know if the model will be sold here or not; we are trying to clarify this with Apple. If it will, then it would work with 3G and Wi-Fi, but not with 4G."

Probably the same people with far more money than common sense that have already bought both the original iPad and the iPad2. smile

I got an ipad2 at best buy

I got an ipad2 at best buy for $100 off regular price. I really like it. I would have gone for the new one but been out from surgery so money played into the decision. It's really good but like guys here have said the camera is only good for FaceTime. The new iPad should have a much nicer camera in addition to retina display and the other upgrades. One thing I would recommend is the Targus "VersaView" case. It swivels for both portrait and landscape positions, covers both sides of the iPad and looks nice. I've used it in multiple positions such as the kitchen table, on my lap, holding it with one hand and the cover folded back, and lying in bed. It's always stable but it doesn't turn off the unit like the "Smart Cover".

One thing to watch out for is if you set the iPad and another device like an iPhone to sync from iCloud be careful if you start adding a bunch of apps after the initial set up. I was downloading a bunch of apps for my wife to have on a trip she is going on and forgot it was being pushed to my iPhone. Almost maxed out the space on the iPhone. Easy to correct but still had to delete a bunch of stuff from the iPhone. Good luck to all of you getting the new one. Hope you enjoy it!

iPad 2 is a better choice considering the $100 discount. The new iPad and iPad 2 front camera are exactly the same (about 1 megapixel). The rear camera is 5 megapixel now.

The new iPad apps are 2 to 5 times larger than the iPad 2.

I did...

I walked into Target at 8:30 AM and bought my first iPad. No one in sight except the cash register operator. I got the new one with 64GB, but no cell tower connection. I wanted the storage for the bigger apps and video supporting the higher resolution. Since iPads are not expandable, I figure maxing storage now is cheapest.

You'll have to. The only way a wifi iPad gets GPS data is from a database of the geocoded wifi hotspots it has connected to. If you want full GPS functionality, you will need an external source for the GPS data - like a bluetooth puck, or BadElf device that plugs into the charging port... which works really good... and with the right app, an iPad makes for an awesome personal navigation device.

Samsung is really making out well being the largest supplier

Samsung is really making out well being the largest supplier to Apple for the major parts in the new iPad.

"Samsung Electronics Co. remains the largest single supplier of iPad components. It made the display in the unit iSuppli examined and it supplies all iPad processors. ISuppli suspects Samsung also made the battery and supplies flash storage memory for some versions of the new iPad."

Interesting article about what the cost of the parts are in the new iPad:

Well I thought I was done with this since I got mine last week but my wife "borrowed" it for a weekend trip she was on and now she keeps " let me check something" and this with with a laptop setting on a table next to her.

Now she wants this one and says " don't you really want the ipad3" ? Now what am I supposed to do???

My advice...

Spring just started, so do what all males would do: give in !

Seriously, take her to a shop, buy her a brand new one - maybe that way you'll get "yours" back ? As I was saying, give in, but take it one step further.

Love, ain't that the very best and most essential thing in Life ? At least that's MY opinion !

I bought two 64GB with 4G

I bought two 64GB with 4G LTE (AT&T) models the day they were out for sale. I thought my wife and I would be all over them until I give them to my sisters this weekend. It's been several days and I have only opened 1 of them. The other one is still shrink wrapped tightly.

I have only spent 5 to 10 minutes on the other one, just to be sure it works and there are no flaws. Put it back in the box as soon as I am done checking and go back to my 7 years old Dell notebook or 2 years old HP Desktop to do my internet related stuff. Am I the only person not easily excited by this gadget?

Any Idea...

New Ipad

This is more like a iPad 2s and while its a nice upgrade, I'm not too impress with what was changed. Unless you're getting the 4G model, the iPad 2 should be just as good and you won't burn your hands using it.

Burning hands?

From what I've read, there was no burning of anyone's hands. Yes it heated up but only after playing Infinity Blade, a very memory intensive game, for 45 minutes. Even Cunsermer Reports, who first reported on this, said it heated up but was not uncomfortable to hold.

4G or Wifi on the iPad?

triliby wrote:

If you went wifi only, there is no good GPS app without a GPS data source from a bluetooth puck or GPS device that plugs into the iPad charging port.

That said, there are lots of apps in the AppStore - Navigon is my app of choice - because maps are all on device.

I'm using a ipad3 right now without a cover and there's no difference in heat and the
ipad2 my wife has. That is just with casual browsing. Hard gaming may be different.

More about the heat thing

It gets "hot" when plugged in... and other devices get just as hot, or hotter...

It looks almost like iPhone

It looks almost like iPhone 4 and 4S but slightly longer and thinner. That's 3 years of the same design. Boring.

Do Tell...

What should Apple have done? Tell us what you would have done?

The same thing they did when

The same thing they did when crossing over from 1st gen iPhone to 3G/GS and to 4/4S, surprise consumers with different designs but more beautiful. The iPhone 4/4S is the most elegant design so far but it's been 2 years. This year's design doesn't look great at all. I'm strictly talking about the external shape, not the hardware in the phone. The iPhone is starting to look like the Blackberry phones, so many different models that look alike.

Galaxy S111

My Samsung Galaxy S111 has all the features PLUS... No micro SD slot for storing music and photos and ease of transferring to a computer...Apple is trying to play catch up as usual. Apple makes a good phone but the new galaxy will outperform apple in so many ways. I don't see anything new that Is ground breaking news. There is plenty of trying to catch up news though..... And geeee now you will get to carry around another connector. those that just have to have an IPhone should go for it....

What do I need a micro SD slot for? And what about ease of transferring music to a computer? I do it wirelessly with my iPhone. Plus if I buy an iTune on my Mac it automagically appears on all my iDevices and visa versa. If I buy on my iPhone it appears instantly on my Mac and my iPad.

With iCloud all my entertainment that may be on my Mac, be it music or movies can be listened to or watched on my iPhone.

You don't like changing the kind of connector you use? Are you still using serial cables for anything or did you move on to USB, firewire or thunderbolt cables?

The connector change has been rumored for several months. The consensus in a lot of the trade press was the primary reason is to foster demand for duplicate accessories. My guess is it won't take too long for someone to start marketing an adapter to allow the old cables/accessories to work with the new units and vice versa.

Micro SD????? What For????

Do you still yearn for floppy disks?

There is no need for a micro SD card. The iPhone comes in three memory capacities. Pick which one you want.

My iPhone transfers pics, music, media, etc. wirelessly and completely automatically. No micro SD card in play at all.

Sorry to hear you need to use a micro SD card to do what an iPhone does transparently and automatically.

The connector on iOS devices has been the same one since the first iPod. Other phones have gone from mostly proprietary connectors to mini USB, then micro USB in the same period of time... Apple has adapters to go from the new connector to the legacy cable and they will get around to licensing 3rd parties to make adapters & cables.

I think the aluminum back

I think the aluminum back looked really good and more practical than the glass back. Several good features on the inside. I didn't upgrade when they came out with the 4S but I didn't upgrade for it. I would like to upgrade to this one.

Reviews

Has anyone seen a review from someone with an actual iPhone 5 in thier hands?

The New Apple Connector Is A Great Advancement

I can't believe the complaining about the new connector.

Are you still mad about floppy discs and Zip drives going away? Do you miss CRTs? Are you still upset that transistors replaced vacuum tubes?

Come on people!!!!!

The new connector is great in that it is tiny compared to the 30-pin it is replacing, and most interestingly is that it is not directional, which means you plug it in regardless of orientation.

That is far better than trying to figure out which way to insert the micro-USB and all others that have a specific orientation and features that are too small for most people to see. So now you no longer have to figure out which direction ot insert the connector, just plug it in.

Does your SIII do that?

Apple already has an adapter available.

Joke!!!!

I can charge my phone, kindle, bluetooth and GPS with one cable and one car charger... No special adapters needed or required to purchase. Holy smokes an innovation for people who can't figure out how to plug the cable in???? didn't realize there was such a problem with the millions of users without such a clever innovation.... You might want to look at the S111 before you make a decision... You may just be surprised...
