When downloading POI files, what is the difference between a CSV format and a GPX format? Thanks.

Dunkin Donuts POI

I just downloaded the updated POI for Dunkin Donuts DD-US.csv. I had a DD-US.wav file that I was using but when I downloaded the new csv file, I got the message that it could not transform the .wav file to the correct format. Please help b/c I love the audio "do you need a coffee, Dunkin Donuts ahead."
Thanks.

Copy sox.exe To Your POILoader Folder

To properly convert the .wav file you will nee to add the sox.exe program into your POILoader directory.

Read about it and get it here.
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730

There is a glitch with POILoader 2.70, to avoid any problems select to have POILoader send the GPI file to your PC, rather than the unit. Once on the PC you can copy it to your units POI Folder or SD card POI folder, as well as having a backup.
The glitch is it names the file with a .poi extension rather than .gpi.

I added the sox.exe file and downloaded to my computer but still got the same message. Please help.

Tell us:

  • where did you get the .wav file and what is its exact current name including extension (and we are assuming that you have unchecked "Hide extensions for known file type" UNCHECKED in Folder Options)
  • What is the exact error message that you get and what program are you running when you get it?

I got the wav file from Kevin, one of the poi-factory contributers. He emailed it to me.
    The current name is DD-US.wav

Error message: "Unable to convert File Path/Custom POI/DD-US.wav to the proper format, therefore the audio file was not transferred." I am using the POI Loader Program for Windows_270.exe.

    @bsp131

    Sent you an email.

Please confirm you named the files exactly the same.
    DD-US.csv
    DD-US.wav
    DD-US.bmp

You also stated you downloaded the sox.exe file to your computer, kindly confirm you copied it to the POILoader folder.

Lastly confirm there are no hidden files in Windows view screen, it sould look like this with the 3 circled in red to work properly.

Yes, the files are named the same.
sox.exe is in the POILoader folder
There are no hidden files in Windows view screen.

    POILoaderforWindow_270.exe

I think the problem might be with the program. I just used an old POI Loader program and it did stated it downloaded fine and not give me the warning message.

the only way to check it out is to the NUVI for a ride. I will try to check it out tonight.

    Ditto, thanks for the link.

You can test by using simulated mode on your Nuvi and go to the nearest Dunkin Doughnuts, no need to drive there to test.

I forgot to mention to you if you want the custom sound to play AT EVERY Dunkin Doughnuts location you will have to rename the 3 files to:
    mobile_DD-US.csv
    mobile_DD-US.wav
    mobile_DD-US.bmp

There are 7 options you can use that must be present to hear the sound, I used mobile for the Dunkin Doughnuts when renaming the files. I forgot to do this with the gpi file I sent you, I will send you a new one using the mobile renaming so the sounds will play.

    1 redlight
    2 speed
    3 camera
    4 gatso
    5 mobile
    6 safety
    7 specs

    Thanks

I would have never known that.

    Simulated route

Just did the simulation and the route had 2 DDs - the icon popped up for both but the sound only picked up on the 1st DDs but not the second.

Check your email and install the last Dunkin Doughnuts_mobile file I sent you.

MAKE SURE you detete any other DD files that are on your unit or SD card, you can't have duplicates.

I just simulated the last file I sent you on two of the closest Dunkin Doughnuts by me, the sound worked perfectly on both.

I do remember sending you the wav file. I still use it every time the DD file is updated and I use POILoadfer v2.7.0.0

I just do it in manual mode with a distance alert set to 1320 feet because I set 2 different wav files for my wife and daughters GPSs.

As I remember, you had problems getting it to compile and work before. I checked my old emails and that was back in May '11. Since you could not get it to work I emailed you a compiled DD.GPI file with the alert already set to 1/4 mile to try and it worked.

I think since that worked we both got busy and never got back to finding the problem. I guess its time now.

    @muell9k

You do not need the name "mobile" in the file names. I use the DD file at the bmp, wav file, and name are "Dunkin Donuts US.xxx" and I get my alerts perfectly fine.

    Didn't work for me

Didn't know that, I have several POI's that unless I put one of the keywords in the files name it would not play the custom sound, only the normal beep. I'll have to experiment some more.

Yes, you did fix the problem for me. However, the DD list was updated and I wanted to update it on the NUVI. That is when I had the same problem. I would like to know how to set up thg gpi file so that I can do it myself without bothering everyone.

When I go to extras on the NUVI, I see there are 2 other DD-US listed. How do I get rid of them. When I access the drive through my computer, the extra file is not listed.

    Different WAV files

    camerabob wrote:

I didn't really think about it because I have about 4 different WAV files I use for my wife, daughter, friends and myself. All were made from the "AT&T Research Labs" site.

    http://www2.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php

I just got home but I'm going to put together a package for bsp131 now and email it so she can compile it herself in the future.

WE still have to get her to search her GPS and SD cards for all other copies of the file and delete them.

    To close out this thread

The help that bsp131 received from others helped solve her other problems with the duplicate copies of the file. However, we had started in the past and never finished finding out why she could not compile the DD file using POILoader.

We took a while back and forth via emails due to our hectic work schedules. The end result is that she had everything setup correctly with POILoader, the shortcut to it was set right pointing to the right folders, the proper sox.exe version was in the proper folder, the file names matched perfectly, no duplicate copies of POILoader on her hard drive, etc. We could find nothing wrong but she still got the error while running POILoader that said "Unable to convert C:\Desktop\Personal\Garmin\Custom POI\DD-US.wav to the proper format, therefore this audio file was not transferred."

Then the subtle difference of "PoiLoader.exe" and "POI Loader.exe" was discovered which is why she did not find the 2nd copy early on. You won't find it if you do a search for "POILoader*.*". So why did Garmin have to change the program name anyway? I should have remembered this because I ran into the same problem whenever Garmin changed the filename a few versions back and also changed the install to folder.

Anyway, the stars aligned and bsp131 is again compiling her own files.

    thx for the replies --
but this is the only ref I find
'If a file contains "GATSO," "mobile," "SPECS," "safety," "speed," or "camera," ....."

which doesn't tell me what they are or how to use them.

I found GATSO = mfg of cameras

So I am assuming GATSO, safety, speed, & camera does the same as my file names of 'Redlight-Cameras' & 'Speed-Cameras'. Is that correct?

But then what is 'mobile' & 'SPECS'?
And why isn't 'redlight' included in the list?

    Missed your post

    from this page - recommended

from this page - recommended reading -
    http://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.gps/pagepoi.htm

it appears all those 'labels' will do the same thing.
the only diff is for human recognition.

[Note: we could have used the word 'redlight' like we did before, or even certain others which are codes (keywords) for types of alerts such as -- "GATSO," "mobile", "SPECS", "safety", "redlight", "speed", or "camera" . I will discuss this more in a later article. We are using 'specs' here just for a variety.]
