My car charger for my 260w died and was wondering why a standard mini USB charger makes the unit think it is connected to a PC.I asume it is the way it's wired.I have so many mini USB adapters I just hate to buy the Garmin replacement if I don't have to.

Have you checked the fuse inside the charger ?

Garmin chargers tell the device to go into GPS mode
Good point about checking the fuse.
Garmin chargers have circuitry to tell the device to run in GPS mode. Some chargers and USB cables don't have that so the GPS assumes it is connected to a computer. There is an explanation here:
