Finally hit some traffic today....

well I left the office around rush hour so I finally hit some traffic on one of our major highways in Toronto today. Before I left I checked for traffic none, but once I hit a typical area for traffic I did get the Yellow posting upon hitting the troubled spot, and just a bit North of there Red....all in all it was bang on as to what the gps indicated. Gave me the length of the backup, and when it predicted traffic opened up it did..can't really complain.
The only issue is that it pretty much gave me no notice of the traffic area. Now, the radio stations did not indicate any traffic either, so perhaps I just hit the beginning of it. Once I was North of the traffic route I did do a traffic check again and it did show that area as still red...
Ocassionally...
Once in a while the system works as designed. Some cities are better than others.
Consistent with my experience
I've had an experience like you describe several times. I've also had warnings of traffic that was not there. I presume it was earlier and cleared up. Only once have I had the desired outcome of a warning and detour so I could miss it.
I still like a little advance notice of an issue. Even when waiting my way through it is the best option, it is nice to know it is coming. Helps me to be mentally ready to wait and I can at least think about getting off for a meal or something.

Use Traffic Search

Actually there is an option on many of the Nuvi's to do that. Just hit the traffic search feature and a list will appear for traffic conditions in proximity of your location and beyond, it diplays location and status.
Whether you choose to believe the findings is up to you. May or may not be accurate.

I would love to have advanced notice of traffic. My NUVI only goes yellow or red when in the thick of it. Do you happen to know if the 765t has this feature?
Yes, the 765t has traffic search

Yes, the 765t does have this feature. When on the map, hit the traffic icon, then hit traffic search and you will see all of the traffic incidents around the area you are receiving traffic for and how far away they are compared to where you currently are. If the GPS happens to route you through one of these areas, it will either let you know there will be a delay or it will automatically route you around it if the traffic is severe enough.

Before going on a trip I use the feature to get a general knowledge of where problems may be.
NOTICE I SAY MAY BE.
If possible, I'll avoid those areas beofre starting my journey.

same here exactly...if possible I will avoid any traffic but I haven't come across lots yet. In this instance I may have just been at the beginning of it as I wasn't notified on Traffic Search of them. Eventually I will see advance notice of some and drive into it just to see if it does work....

Traffic Works Reasonably Well
It works reasonably well for me in So Cal. It shows me of all slow downs. Sometimes it shows upcoming traffic congestion that doesn't exist. I assume the congestion has cleared but the info hasn't filtered through yet. Remember that it's not as if sensors on the roads are tied directly to Garmin GPS units. The info has several hops to get through to get to us.
sorta works
I've been using the traffic on my Garmin for a few years. The main problem is if there is a slowdown you get yellow or red lines on the map. I live in a very urban area so the entire map is covered in mostly red and a bit of yellow and this leaves me with some inaccurate speed info at times. Also accident reports and traffic backups are usually delayed by 15-30 minutes making it useless sometimes.

Yes, it's almost impossible to have real time information because of the nature of the data being reported, and how it's relayed and stored.
The only real time reporting would be freeway cameras showing the real live images.

Re: Traffic
I have been having pretty good luck with my 2350LMT Nuvi as far as traffic info so far.
