Extra POI editor caused a failure to launch the internet for me

While trying to open a previous csv file today it hung up. The program froze and I could not get out of it. I had to do a reset on my computer.

After a restart, I could not launch on to the internet. The screen would flash like it both launched and shut down at the some time. I spent hours trying to get onto the internet. My last resort was to do a sys restore. Lucky before I install any programs I always create a sys restore point as I did when I installed this program. After I completed the restore my internet function was working again. Has anyone had this happen to them. If so, what was the cause and cure. thanks

FWIW

For what it's worth - I use Phil Hornby's GeePeeEx Editor and have had no issues. You may want to give it a try - He is also a member of this site.

More Info, please

@mrcaveman,
I want to make sure I understand your situation.

I am thinking that you

  • did a sys restore point
  • loaded EPE
  • tried to open a csv file using EPE and your computer froze.
  • on restart, no internet was available
  • you did a restore to the previous point
  • on restart, internet was available

Where did the csv file come from?

never had a problem with accessing internet with EPE

I'm running windows 7 and never ever had a problem with accessing Internet after running EPE.

What versions of both are you using?

You should have just done a ctr/alt/del to shut down the frozen program. Doing a reset caused an inproper Operating System shut down and may be causing your problem. There are files that may have been damaged when you did the reset.

Internet issue

I never heard or had any internet issue with EPE. In fact, I am pretty sure EPE has nothing to do with it as it simply launches an embedded process of Internet Explorer which is killed at the same time as EPE.

I would suggest that the crash issue affected something on your Windows installation. Not sure what it was. EPE creates no system or temporary files than could cause such issue.

I am glad you could do a system restore and recover gracefully.

Edit: in case you did not know, EPE creates a recovery file in the EPE installation folder. It is a gpx file that is updated every few minutes (10 minutes I think). This way, if EPE crashes you have the ability to reopen this file to recover your work. Note that this file is deleted after a normal EPE exit.

Thanks everyone for the

Thanks everyone for the input. I had no choice but to do a reset because my attempt to use ctr/alt/del failed. I just got a hourglass that never would go away. I had the latest ver of extra and running a uptodate xp. I will be building a new system soon but with win8 coming out am not sure when that may be.

I had the same problem twice! I installed EPE and IE worked for awhile when first using EPE. After a few hours it failed to load. Fortunately, I had done an image of the drive the day before. I re-imaged the drive and re-installed EPE with the multi-lang version this time and sure enough, IE failed to launch again. I tried to re-install IE w/o success. I had to restore the image once again. I'm wondering if one of the OCX library files may have screwed up a windows driver that IE needs. It maybe OS specific. I'm using Win XP SP3 with IE8. Before reading this post, I thought I was the only one.

Still having trouble

I tried to email Turbo but haven't heard back yet. Is anyone else having trouble with IE not starting after installing EPE? This is very frustrating!

I run windows 7 and never have had any problems with EPE

I run windows 7 both 32 bit and 64 bit on all three home computers and never have had any problems with EPE. Sounds like it is a windows XP problem and the newer operating systems work fine.

Does a computer running XP qualify as a Historic or Collectible OS yet? smile It has been so many years since I had a computer running XP I cannot even remember it anymore.

I have windows 8 running on my second hard drive in my desktop and after playing with it for a while I cannot see any reason to upgrade from windows 7 unless I would have a touchscreen monitor on the computer.

Historical is not necessarily hysterical

XP SP3 with IE8 here on my work laptop, no problems. But EPE does take a while to fire up so I'm thinking memory management could be an issue. Consider that IE - any versio - is an awful memory hog. If you end up with memory exhaustion that could cause all kinds of weird problems before you ever even see the popups about low virtual memory.

Any other POI editors?

Well I can't seem to figure out what the problem is and I've emailed Turbo and haven't had a response so I'm about to give up on EPE. This application is causing me tremendous problems. Are there any other POI Editors that one can recommend (free and/or paid)?

Thanks.

I saw the EXACT same symptoms

I only rarely use Internet Explorer. Take it from a Firefox (and occasional Chrome) user that the problem was with IE.

At some point, Microsoft decided to update my (XP/SP3) laptop with IE8 and then, whenever I would try to run it, would inform me that a program on my computer had changed its default search engine. (One more reason not to run IE). Saying "OK, go ahead and fix that" had no effect and the same warning message would appear whenever I tried to run IE.

Finally, I got to the exact symptoms that you describe; try to launch IE and it flashes briefly on the screen and then disappears. (Fortunately, I have real browser(s) to use when that happens to IE).

I finally got disgusted and uninstalled IE8, at which point it reverted to IE7, which works. Now, I just have to be sure to not allow Windows Update to install IE8!

When IE "crashes" did you look in the Windows Event Viewer logs? Does anything get logged?

I need to check.

Good point. I will need to re-create the issue and check the log.

Thanks.

There is a fix for that

Tools, Options, Programs tab, remove check-mark from under "Default web browser". That will stop IE from complaining every time Firefox takes back the responsibility for opening web pages.

Also, if you wish to remove your IE8 worries, see this MS article: "Toolkit to Disable Automatic Delivery of Internet Explorer 8"

Sounds like a browser hijack to me. What operating system are you using and also what version of Internet Explorer ?

Basic IE troubleshooting always begins with clearing your temp files, cookies, and browsing history. To access your internet options go to your control panel and double click the icon labeled "Internet" options. Click the appropriate buttons to clear those items and try to load the program again.

If you are using IE 7 you can try to run the program without loading any add-ons to see if one of them is causing the problems. To do this, click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

(You can also load IE without add-ons by clicking START --> RUN and then typing iexplore.exe -extoff)

If those don't work try to re-register IEPROXY.DLL by clicking START --> RUN and typing regsvr32 IEPROXY.DLL and then clicking OK.

When IE dissapears does IExlorer.exe show in the task manager's list of running processes?

Have any toolbars or new sofware been added recently? If so and you are using Win XP you may want to try a system restore to a previous point before the changes were made or uninstall the toolbars completely. Also disabled all Pop-Up blockers to see if that has any effect.

Back from vacations...

Hi,

Sorry for the delay. I am just back from vacations last night. I'll read the thread tonight.

IE8 issue with EPE

Hi Preroll,

I am currently running IE8 on Win 7 x64 and never had such an issue. Except for the posts in this thread, I never heard of such a problem.

It would be great to know what error is produced when you experience the problem. It may put us on the right track. I'll do my best to help.

Safer Shutdown

A little known fact that works on most "Newer" mother boards:

Don't hold the power button in until it shuts down!!!

Instead, hold the power button in for about 3 seconds then release it and wait. This will start a "Restart" process, just like you selected it in the Logoff panel (the one you can't get to with "Ctrl + Alt + Delete" when it's a total freeze).

This has worked many times for me and the times it didn't, I think I just did not wait long enough.

This should save you from having corrupted files due to a hard shutdown.

I'll try and reproduce it over this weekend if I can get some time. I'll take note of the logs and send it off to you.

Thanks.

Can you post the logs here for us to read? I'm curious too.

EPE does not respond

Does it says that EPE cannot complete the current action because the other application is busy? A popup window appears and you can click on Retry or Switch-To?

I got that error after trying to open a CSV file. Maybe it is the same for you. I started Task Manager and found an Excel task. As soon as I killed that processed, EPE unlocked.

I wonder what happened...
