SD Cards

You can use SD cards for storage of maps, POI's, pictures etc.

Yes, it would allow you to store all of the maps on your card.

I also store the larger jcv file on the card since it won't fit on the 1490 due to lack of memory.

Is 4G big enough?

4 gigs gives you lots of room for now, and cheap to boot.

Don't forget you can split maps between the nuvi, and the card as well. Like Canada, and Mexico on the card, and the US on the device itself.

OK, How do I do this split? Or is it Automatic or what? And what should I put where?

You can put the US on the unit with the map update. Then, using Mapsource, select and transfer other maps to the card. They will be labeled gmapsupp.img.

I thought Mapsource was no longer available. I downloaded "Base Camp" even if I don't know what to do with it. Simple? There is nothing simple about this TV with the typewriter attached.

As of 2012.30, Mapsource was still available AFAIK. Current version that I have is 6.16.3.

Mapsource is now on my computer. Next dumb question is "What do I do with it?" Appreciate your help.

Seriously, what do you want to do with it? Choose a map to export? Click the 'Polygon' tool and then start clicking the map to test it. Hold the 'Ctrl' button to make multi-selections.
