Garmin Software Updates / Support Page

This old page http://www8.garmin.com/support/blosp.jsp used to list all the updates for every unit and the release notes for each firmware update. Now with the new Nuvi's, it seems you cannot just download the updates manually like the old days. You need Webupdater, etc. Anyway, the question is, how does one see a list of the firmware updates and the release notes with the newer units? I would like to get a 3490LMT down the road and I know there has been some trouble with traffic, etc. but would like to see a list of revisions before going ahead.

On a side note, should Mapsource work with the 3490LMT as Basecamp seems to be its replacement. Need to transfer waypoints (favorites) from my 765T.

Thanks.

Regarding the Support page: it always seemed to be a partial list of updates for me. I guess it's even less so now. I'm always impressed when our DorkusNimrod somehow finds additional genuine Garmin web pages on certain models' updates. All I can say is that with WebUpdater (as opposed to using myDashboard), you are given the list of updates included with firmware etc before starting to download it--or chosing not to. I urge anyone seeing new firmare not only to post its availabilty here at The Factory but to also cut and paste the list revisions from WebUpdater into the message here. Of course, this isn't what you're asking since this can only be done once you own a certain model and have it USBed to your computer--it won't work if you're looking for info on updates on a model you're thinking about buying.

Also note that a good source for older firmware can be found here:
http://gawisp.com/perry/nuvi/
Just be careful when trying to go to a previous firmware version since some may break certain features of the nuvi. For me, a reversion to an older firmware version would be a last-resort choice, one where I'm willing to accept bricking the nuvi or some of its features.

Regarding Mapsource vs BaseCamp: I still prefer Mapsource. But for these newer and future models, let me suggest transferring and saving your Favorites into both. Having just said that, I suppose I should learn how to do it with BaseCamp and do it for my Favorites. wink

I've owned a 3490LMT since

I've owned a 3490LMT since it came out in early October and absolutely love it. I've had zero problems and the traffic is the MOST accurate and fastest updating (30 seconds) I had on any unit from Garmin.
The traffic saved my butt yesterday in Chicago when it showed me a road closure due to a fatality. It detour me and saved me more than an hour of travel time. AWESOME product!

FM traffic?

Does the nuvi 3490LMT traffic signal come from FM broadcast? I believe HD radio is the digital version of FM broadcast radio.

Digital 3D Traffic Delivers

Digital 3D Traffic
Delivers traffic updates every 30 seconds over the HD Radio™ broadcasting system. That’s up to 10 times faster than traditional traffic receivers. With Digital 3D Traffic, you get all the advantages of our extensive 3D Traffic avoidance system with the added benefit of up to 10 times more frequent updates.

Navteq

The Garmin site says that Navteq is the content provider for Digital 3D Traffic. In my opinion, ClearChannel Traffic has better content in the New York City and Long Island area. I hope there is an option to sign up for ClearChannel with the 3490LMT and the GTM 60 receiver.

Basecamp

I thought Basecamp drops some features that Mapsource had such as containing the actual matching mapsets in the unit? Not sure since I haven't tried it yet.

I still find it frustrating that I can't download and review the firmware updates like the old days. Not a big fan of myDashboard or even WebUpdater.

Oh well...

3490 Traffic

Some Amazon reviews are reporting issues with the traffic. This led me to put on the brakes with a purchase. Here's a quote from a post on GPSPASSION RE: the 3490.

"The 3790 supports TMC while the GTM 60 puts out a proprietary protocol because it covers roads that TMC doesn't cover.

Have the people who have had issues with the 3490 traffic come any closer to a resolution? Since some are getting it and some aren't are there users within the same metro areas who have and some who do? I'm wondering if its a broadcast issue? Maybe the broadcast signal isn't telling the unit to clear the logs for new incoming info. Just thinking out loud. I'm thinking of getting on but there was a user on Amazon who in their review said it wasn't working for them and they are in the Providence area."

I'm wondering myself if the above question is the reason why some get it and some do not. I'd like to jump on this unit soon, but still may wait a few months to see if it improves.
