Can't find Garmin Maps on my iMac

Checking out the Garmin site for what Applications it had to offer for the Macintosh, I came across the Garmin Lifetime Map Updater.

i installed it, attached my Nuvi 3790 LMT, and downloaded new maps both to my GPS unit and to my computer.

I have searched everywhere in my computer and cannot find the maps that were allegedly downloaded to the computer.

Any of you Mac/Garmin users tell me where I could find them???

I just went through this...

And I don't remember the details to help you .

It turns out the installer does not move or copy the downloaded file to the correct location to access it from BaseCamp, Roadtrip, Mapinstall or MapManager.

The final location is:

/Users/PUTYOURUSERNAMEHERE/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Maps/City Navigator North America NT 2012.3.gmap

But first you have to find the file... I'm trying to remember where it was. The file is on your computer somewhere.

UPDATE: I found it!!!!

disk/Users/YOURUSERNAMEHERE/Library/Caches/com.garmin.LifetimeMapUpdate/IMG

And the map file "City Navigator Noth America NT 2012.30.gmap"

will be in there.

Copy that file over to the location I mentioned earlier and you should be okay. That's what worked for me.

Thanks SO much! Now what???

Thanks, Diesel, I would never have found them without your help.

It's interesting to note that the file "City Navigator North American NT 2012.30.gmap" was installed in BOTH the locations you cited: i.e.,

Macintosh HD:Users:MYNAME:Library:Caches:com.garmin.LifetimeMapUpdate

and in...

Macintosh HD:Users:MYNAME:Library:Application Support:Garmin:Maps

(BTW, searching for "Maps" in the Finder and in Spotlight produced nothing. However, I did find them using EasyFind, a free Mac search Application from here, should you be interested in downloading it: http://www.devontechnologies.com/).

Now this problem.

When I launch Garmin MapManager, and click on Open and navigate to the downloaded maps, I get this: Install these maps? City Navigator North America NT 2012.30.

I click on Install, get "Please wait, installing...", then " Maps installed successfully".

But when I now launch MapManager I am right back to "Install these maps?" again. Shouldn't one be able to view the maps via MapManager?

I went to the Garmin site > Macintosh MapManager and found this:

MapManager copies maps and unlock codes into the right place to be accessible by MapInstall and Training Center. To migrate the maps from your Windows PC, download MapConverter onto your PC and follow the instructions.

and this...

Installation Instructions

Click on 'Download' and choose to save the file to your computer.
Double-click the file to open it.
A new Finder window will open. Locate and double-click on the 'Install Garmin MapInstall' icon.
Follow the installer program's prompts to install Garmin MapInstall.

So, I have the folder with the maps and the UnlockCodes.ucx file but I am missing some stop and can't put it all together.

Can anyone help???

Call Garmin

Call Garmin Tech support, stop trying to do this yourself. Garmin needs to know they could have done better.

Emailed Garmin Support

As it was a Saturday, I edited the email I posted here and emailed it to Garmin support.

If I receive a useful answer from them, I will post that here.

Answer from Garmin

I will be happy to assist you. The MapManager application is only used for installing maps to your Mac. What specifically are you wanting to do?

If you want to view the maps on your computer, then you will need to use Garmin BaseCamp. If you do not already have this installed on your Mac, you can dowload it from the link below:

I downloaded Base Camp, and there they were.

With BaseCamp, you can perform the following tasks:

Transfer data to and from your Garmin device.

Create, view, edit, and organize waypoints, routes, and tracks.

Find places, such as addresses, points of interest, and public land survey areas included in your detailed map data.

View map data in 2D and 3D.

View topographical information included in your detailed map data.

"Geotag" photos with geographical location information.

Print detailed topographical maps, PLS quads, and multi-page poster maps.

Download and view BirdsEye™ Imagery.

Import and view Garmin Custom Maps.

Can you load maps to your GPS?

Can you get to the maps to install them to your GPS? That would be with MapInstall.

Believe maps are on GPS

I will check the GPS tomorrow to be sure, but when I downloaded the latest map update a few days ago, I recall noticing for the first time the choices to download the maps to your unit AND to your computer.

I believe they were downloaded to both.

Will let you know tomorrow

os x garmin lifetime map update installing to wrong directory

Diesel,
Many thanks for your post. I had the same situation:
- Garmin Lifetime Map Update telling me I had new map updates
- Installing map updates to both my machine and my unit (GPSMap 60CSx)
- After installation, both Garmin Basecamp and my unit (via System screen) not showing the latest map update as selectable or installed.

Per your instructions, my map updates were installed in the ~/Library/Caches/com.garmin.LifetimeMapUpdates/IMG directory.

1) Fire up a terminal
2) cd ~/Library/Caches/com.garmin.LifetimeMapUpdates/IMG
3) cp -r *.gmaps ~/Library/Application\ Support/Garmin/Maps
4) Wait a few minutes (yes - minutes) for the files to be copied over.

I was then able to run Basecamp and select the latest map update, and to run Map Install, select regions, and upload them to my GPS unit.

As others report on the web, Garmin seems to be somewhat incompetent when it comes to Macs, probably due to their lack of experience with the platform. I have previously written Garmin regarding this issue and told that I needed to call them during business hours during the weekend day, which is very inconvenient for me.

So far your post is the only solution I have been able to find on the web.

Again, many thanks,
Jim G

Glad I could Help

I spent plenty of time on the phone with Garmin to get that fix.

I saved that file structure on a sticky note for reference, for the next update.

wink

It just happened again with the recent update, and I was hoping it would have been resolved.

Garmin help via telephone

Hi Diesel,

Garmin, like every single solitary company on the web, makes is something of a struggle for you to find how to contact them for help. You are required to jump through hoop after hoop of menus and sub-menus, FAQs, etc., until you finally reach either an email address or telephone number.

If you have that Garmin number handy, might I trouble you for it?

About a week ago I wrote them the following email and have yet to receive an answer so I thought I'd call them.

*************
I have downloaded updated maps to my computer and to my Nuvi 3700LMT several times.

When I go here on my computer:
Home/Library/Application Support/ Garmin/Maps/

I see the following files:

City Navigator North America NT 2012.30.gmap
City Navigator North America NT 2012.40.gmap
City Navigator North America NT 2013.10.gmap

When I go here on my computer:
Home/Library/Caches/com.garmin.LifetimeMapUpdate/006-D2338-09/IMG/

I see just the latest map update:
City Navigator North America NT 2013.10.gmap

My question is: Do I really need all these older versions of the maps, i.e., 2012.30 and 2012.40, or can I delete them.

Thank you,
**************
Since Garmin is ignoring my email, perhaps they'll answer my question over the telephone.

Many thanks, Diesel.

If you're using a PC and have these maps on the PC for use by Mapsource or BaseCamp, individual maps can be deleted by going to Control Panel, then either Add or Remove Programs or Programs and Features (depending on your flavor of Windows) and uninstalling the maps no longer needed. I tend to keep older maps for now since it lets me use Mapsource and switch versions of maps to see what's been changed or updated either road- or POI-wise.

I assume the for the Mac folks, there's a similar way to uninstall programs--or in this case, older City Navigator maps.

Struggle?

New Version of Basecamp available

Hi JB,

Just discovered that there is a new version of Basecamp available, 3.3.2.0.

Also, within the past week or so I downloaded the most recent map update from Garmin, City Navigator North America NT 2013.10.gmap.

When I launched Basecamp, under Maps in the desktop menu bar I saw that I cold access the original maps that came on my Nuvi unit, City Navigator North America NT 2012.30.gmap, and both updates I have downloaded since purchasing the unit, City Navigator North America NT 2012.40.gmap and City Navigator North America NT 2013.10.gmap.

Perhaps there is no longer a need to run those Terminal commands???

Cheers,

MacBook - Maps Install

Thanks all for your very helpful posts here.

Using some of your findings, I just installed Colorado topo to my MacBook and eTrex 20, using current firmware & Basecamp install (8/2013) with following steps:

1. I found that to install any gmap file, it MUST be copied to /Users//Library/Application Support/Garmin/Maps. In this example, the Colorado topo gmap file cotopo11.gmap from the wonderfully helpful site gpsfiledepot

2. Once in the correct directory, click on this file (cotopo11.gmap) to automatically launch the file with Garmin Maps Manager. Or you could manually open in Maps Manager. Process the file

3. To install to Garmin device, open Garmin MapInstall, and complete the guided install process
