Many new units seem to exclude Canada

I guess it depends where you live in relation to Canada. I live about 150 miles from the Vancouver so while it's not a 10 minute drive knowing if I buy a new unit
without Canada maps means my gps is a brick when I go there seems foolish. Newer units such as the 40LM have 2 versions. More expensive unit (010-00990-20)includes Canada while cheaper version (010-00990-21)does not. $40 more or 50% increase in price seems alot for including Canada. Seems this maybe a way for garmin to not have to increase memory size but how many notice, or don't notice this when buying?
Old Hat
This is old hat for Garmin. The 2x0 units when released had three different levels:
200, 200W: Lower 48 States
250, 250W: United States and Canada (NOTE: No Mexico)
260, 260W: As 250W, with the addition of TTS.
All they did this time was muddy the issue by giving the unit that includes Canada the same model number as the unit that just has the United States. The users of this site are not likely to be getting units in the Essentials line unless given them as gifts. They'll go for the Advanced or Prestige units, which don't have a memory issue, though they will still likely have the map differences.
In answer to your actual question though, not many are going to notice this.

That's why we keep ralphy1 on board at The Factory:

and why I live within walking distance to Beaver Street Brewery and Lumberyard Brewery with their IPA and Imperial Red (think of it as IPA on steroids). I now have a bottle of their Fireside Ale in the fridge--it's Imperial Red aged in oak bourbon barrels. I'm trying to save it for Christmas--but that's a long way off.

A useful set of POI's I didn't know existed, so beer jokes do find God's favour!

Yes, I find beer has a very short shelf life too
it gets tricky sometimes
Maps coverage is usually mentioned on box.
But there is one more problem (beside one that Strephon_Alkhalikoi mentioned above), that arise when you try to update maps. Many units after 2nd or 3rd update are running "out of memory" and instead of updating map to original coverage they give choice of smaller area that fits into unit memory. If you don't pay attention during installation all the sudden you can get downgraded from "US and Canada" to "lover 48 states".
And it can cause nasty shock when you live near Canada and after crossing border you are in "white hole"
Map
It would be nice if this was a little more defined on the packaging when you buy it.

The old C330 had this problem. It has 1GB internal memory IIRC and lost full North American coverage with the 2009 map update. I only updated it once with the initial free map update and had to choose lower 48 at that time. 2GB units are now feeling the strain. It is rather annoying that Garmin does not have a way for customers to use our own SD card to augment the memory and allow map updates to work through the normal update process. With SD cards so cheap now, you could easily get an 8GB card and use that for the bulk of the map storage for your device.
I support the right to keep and arm bears.
No Canada maps
I was in Best Buy the other day, and hapened to look at the new Garmins. A lot of them did not list Canada or Mexico in the maps.
Not that I plan to go there in the near future, but I have traveled there in te past and found the Canada map on my older unit to be quite helpful.
I guess Garmin really doesn't care about the consumer just profits. I will think twice before I buy another one from them.

I have the complete NA including Canada, Mexico & PR using the SD card. I also have the large JCV file with the 2012.3 update.
I am experiencing some problems which I will post in another thread.
