Garnin Edge 800 - POI Loader

Has anybody here had any luck transferring custom POI's to a Garmin Edge 800? Using Garmin's POI Loader I'm getting a FileName.poi file loaded into the \Garmin\POI folder. The POI Loader returns a "successful" message with the correct number of files being transferred at completion, but I can't find any of the new POI's on the GPS unit. I've searched for the new POI's in the \Where To?\Locations and the \Where To?\All POI menus without any luck. Should I be looking elsewhere to find the added custom POI's or is the GPS unit just not reading the file?

i don't see

I don't see anywhere in the online specs where it accepts custom POI. It accepts routes "courses" but not POI.

I read on the OSM Forum that

I read on the OSM Forum that one person with an Edge 800, using POI Loader was able to transfer data (.gpi file) and all of the custom POI's were located under \Where To?\Locations. It didn't work for him until he did the 2.30 update. I'm on the more recent 2.40 update.

Funny thing is that when I transfer to the GPS Unit's internal memory (in lieu of SD Card), POI Loader creates a .gpi file. As far as I can tell the GPS unit isn't reading the .gpi file either though. I've used both csv and gpx files with POI Loader so that may be the distinguishing factor determining whether the output is .poi or .gpi.

In all my various forum searches I don't anything about .poi files. Is this a normal file type for POI Loader?

Poi loader is the problem

Poi loader 2.7.0 is most likely what you are using. It loads poi to internal and creates a xxx.gpi file. If you send it to a card it names it xxx.poi. You need to hook it to a computer and rename the file extension. It will then be seen by the unit.

There is a problem with the version 2.7.0 poi loader.

Use EPE

Save the file as a .gpi if that's what it needs. Changing the extension may not work.

I'm now wondering if the

I'm now wondering if the Edge 800 is even capable of reading custom POI's at this point. I've tried renaming the .poi files to .gpi as noted in the thread about problems with latest POI Loader update and that didn't work. I also had POI Loader use the GPS Unit's internal memory as the target destination where it created a .gpi file and that didn't work either.

Part of the problem I have is that I'm not even sure if looking in the right place on the GPS unit to try and find the custom POI's. Between "Locations" (waypoints basically) and "All POI's" you would think I had all the bases covered. I really don't see any place else in the menu options where the custom poi's would be. Maybe I just need to wait for the next update (POI Loader or Edge 800) and then give it a try once more.

Edge 800 does not seem to be able

Edge 800 does not seem to be able to take custom poi's. I did not see anything in the manual. It did reference routable maps and being able to hold other maps like city navigator and use built in pois.

Manual here. https://support.garmin.com/support/manuals/manuals.htm?partN...

@Juggernaut. Renaming the file from .poi to .gpi does work. I do it multiple times with version 2.7.0. Hoping Garmin repairs it at some time.

Custom POIs

Don't have an Edge but I read the manual the same as pwohlrab.

There seem to be built in "points of interest" but no mention of "Custom POIs"

Update from Garmin Support

I received this response from Garmin Support:

There is no way to use standard CustomPOI`s (.gpi) with the Edge 800 at the moment, but it`s possible to store waypoints as POI data by creating an IMG file.
