I updated Garman 1490t in now I have no Canada

What I did yesterday was. I did an update) Garmin's website and everything went fine and today underway to Kingston. We tried our Garmin and there is no Canadian on it whatsoever. Would anybody have any idea what went wrong

There is

There is a version of City Navigator that only includes the lower 48 states and Hawaii so possibly you loaded that version on your 1490T.

There is a major storage space shortish on the 1xxx models so it's possible that the update process calculated that there wasn't enough room on the Nuvi for the full North America map version. In addition, there is an option in the update process to load only certain portions of the full North American map update, but it sounds like you didn't do that.

If you haven't gone into your Nuvi's internal storage and deleted all voice, vehicle, text, help, and EULA files than it is possible that the update process determine that only the lower 49 (as Garmin calls it) would fit on your Nuvi.

First thing I would do if I bought a new garmin..

is remove the unused language files and icons I don't use. They take up space and can always be easily downloaded if needed via the updater or garmin website.

what I did was I bought the lifetime update and I went to the garmin website and I downloaded the lifetime Garmin updater and then I did the update but I do think I remember seeing something about the 49 states. I think I did see that, but I thought nothing of it. I did not know that my Garmin did not have a lot room to download stuff so that is about it now. I do not have any Canadian maps on my Garmin and I have no idea on how to fix this. So on Monday I am phoning Garmin all I can do is asked if anybody out there has any idea how to fixes and if there is any possibility if anybody in my area that would know how to fix. Thanks for everything

Okay, I figured out how to

Okay, I figured out how to delete the files that I do not need I reinstalled the map but I still do not get Canada. So what I need to know is, where can I find North America and Canada. I hope this makes sense
. Maybe this help. This is what I have been downloading and trying to install----Lower 49 states 2012.20 but for some reason this does not include Canada. Thanks for any help

Map Download Options

Did you do the suggestion by t923347 in his post above, and select the North America maps download options at the start of the download process?

I just had the same thing

I just had the same thing happen using the new "Garmin Lifetime Updater" program. After I went in and deleted the unused voice file the program gave me the option to "reinstall" the maps. This time it automatically gave me the US and Canada maps.

Map install tutorial

If you take a look at the Lilla tutorials I linked in my post above, the last one on the list is a step-by-step guide on reinstalling the maps, with screen shots of all the install steps.

I'm probably just misunderstanding you, but you say that you selected "Lower 49 States" for download, and you are concerned that you can't see any Canadian location on your 1490?

You do know that Canada isn't part of the "Lower 49"?

:-)

I don't think he realizes just how dim that statement sounds.

To the OP: Did you also delete the old junction view file before installing the map update? As noted earlier space is at a premium on these devices and the existing junction view file might be the cause of your problem. It's either that or you purchased the wrong map update.

Missing word - very important.

I think that sentence needs the word "Un-needed" added behind "all"!

Well I just figured it out.

Well I just figured it out. It is all working great. It took a while, but it is done. And yes I do know that Canada is not part of the 49 states. I know how dome that must've sound now, but we all do dumb things. One time or another.
I would like to thank everybody who helped me. I would not got this fixed without each and every one of you I know now why this is one of the top-pol sites on the Internet once again thanks everyone smile smile

good job

on fixing it, I'm not familiar with your unit, does it have a slot for a SD card? My Zumo doesn't have enough space for all of the US, but with an SD card inserted and using MapSource I have all of the US, Canada and Mexico on the unit.

Well, when I did was I

Well, when I did was I followed Lilla how to and everything worked out fine. The only thing I did different was I download a different updater that gave me the choice of the full North America map and now everything seems to be working just fine but there is one thing I do not understand why Garmin would send out an update to my GPS and not give me any warnings about the amount of space I have on it. The average person that buys these things would not think of that. And I'm one of them. I had no idea that my GPS would not hold that update. So that's about it again thanks for everything you people have been fantastic. Have a good day smile

I just updated my 1390t last night and I got the same result

losing the Canada map. I haven't tried again yet but I think Garmin tried to save it bandwidth for download that most people wouldn't use.

I don't wish to sound flippant...

but do you/will you ever go to Canada? I didn't care if it was there or not. I have a feeling that, myself incuded, when we download a lifetime map, we all want as much as we can pack into our Nuvi. I am at the stage where if I'm not going there...I don't want it taking up space on my GPS! Just one man's opinion...

I do ... too use Canada

jmkthird, I do ... I do!

This year, like most, we'll be running from Illinois to Fort McMurray, CA ... and back ... and then down to the Florida Keys for a couple of months.

Our son and his family live in Fort Mac, CA. We winter in south Florida.

We've also, in past years, run to Cape Breton Highlands, Nova Scotia ... to Phoenix, AZ ....

Garmin should make it obvious what is being installed on its users GPS machines.

Having said that, I know, from conversations and emails with Garmin ... that the company is well aware of the memory shortage problem on the 1xxx series ... and they will be making some changes in future updates hopefully.

They may have

They may have already done something in that regard. I updated my 1695 a couple of weeks ago to 2012.20, after deleting all the files on the Nuvi that I didn't need. I therefore had lots of free space for the map update. The update went smoothly but the really good thing was that I got the very large (700+MB) JV file loaded on the device along with full North America map coverage.

As has been discussed here many times, the 1xxx models were getting a very small JV file as Garmin was determining map coverage and JV file size by Nuvi model based on original storage space and not by currently available space.

My experience would indicate that the update process now checks the available storage space on the Nuvi and downloads, by default, the biggest map and JV file possible for the free space present.

Only the release of 2012.30 will let us know for sure if this is the case.
