Nuvi 765T Power Cradle Issues

Just wondering if anyone else out there has had problems with their 765T (or similar model) power cradles going out on them? This is the 3rd power cradle to go out on me in 4 years, and it always happens when I'm on vacation (last year), or about to go on vacation (next week) and really need it the most.

Since there are no moving parts, I can't figure out why they keep doing this. I have tried cleaning the connections on both the Nuvi and the cradle, as well as checking for bent pins on the cradle (none), but it still goes to battery when connected. When I connect to a different (borrowed) cradle, using the same power cord, it works just fine. At $23.00 each, it's starting to add up, and is also getting frustrating.

Am I the only one having bad luck with these things or are there others?

Garmin fix

I had problems in the past with traffic cable connector to the 765T cradle starting to separate from the cable itself.
I tried taping the cable and connector to the cradle but that didn't work for long (too much wiggle). What seems to be working is super gel gluing the cable to the connector and holding the pieces together until it set solid. So far, so good.

With so many people having the same problem, why isn't Garmin doing something to fix it.

power cradle issue

The 765t has been on the discontinued list for 2 or
3 years. I don't think that we will get any support
for it. Its a shame, because the 765t was a good
model.

The 765t was a great model and now I am having touchscreen problems. I am ready to cry. The screen is not responding correctly and I don't know what to do. I want it fixed but where do I go.

A lot of folks have had success with:

http://www.sharc.net/gps_LCD_repair.htm

This assumes your touchscreen problem is a hardware issue. If your problem is a calibration problem, you can recalibrate the screen yourself. Your reply doesn't offer enough info to know what your problem is.

Fix or get a new one?

It definitely is a touchscreen issue not a calibration issue. I love my 765t but is it worth it to fix or should I just get a new one. Are there any models out there that are comparable to the 765t.

That's what happened to my cradle - stress cracked the solder joints on the power socket. they are too small to re-solder.

No they aren't, but you have to use something smaller than a 250w Weller soldering gun. And if you are like me, you have to use a magnifier in order to see what you're doing.

Agreed...

Using the right tools gets the job done the right way. I certainly wouldn't use hedge clippers to trim my finger nails. mrgreen

My 765T Power Cord,

has a small piece of plastic broken off the connector end, where it connects to the cradle. I don't want to give up this trusty old GPS, and was wondering if anyone had a 765 that has bit the dust and wanted to sell their cable.

Power Cord

You can get a power cord from Garmin with a mini-usb connector that plugs into the usb port on the back. I tried to get the cradle cord from Garmin for my 760 and wasn't able to.

But ...

Unfortunately on the 7xx units, you only get about 60% of the screen brightness when you power through USB instead of the cradle. I know this is true for the 7x5 nuvi's and assume it is also true on the 7x0 series.

You can easily pick up a replacement power adapter on eBay. Here is one example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Garmin-NUVI-750-755-760-765-Vehicle-...

$12.59 looks like a reasonable price for a better cable that includes shipping. The vendor also has good feedback.

I did notice the member alleghany has the 765T where the cable included Traffic. The one on Ebay does not have Traffic. Personally I would get the one on Ebay and give up the Traffic, never did work well on any of the units I had that had FM Traffic receiver (GTM20\GTM25|GTM35).

Edit- I never can figure out why some posts go off the page.

Not simple, but could become handy in the future. Thank you for posting it.

Bad cradle

I have 2 765T units (wife and daughter) so it was easy enough to prove it was the cradle on the daughter's unit.

My wife leaves the cradle on the dash and just removes the 765T when she gets out and has had no problems.

My daughter, part of the throw away and buy new rather than take care of things society, takes everything and throws it in her glove box. Well sure enough, I took her cradle apart following the instructions from one of the above posts and the cable socket just fell out. not a single pin was connected.

I took one look at the pins and knew I wasn't going to be able to solder them back on my garage workbench.

The good news, though this problem has existed for years, the cradle is still available on Amazon from GPS City for 20.99 with free shipping. I didn't bother looking any where else. I used this link from a post on the 1st page of this thread Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Nuvi-755t-Cradle-Holder/dp/B001... by Panache.
