Tampa Getting Red Light Cameras

TAMPA | Drivers in Tampa, beware: cameras are starting to go up at some of Tampa's busiest intersections and fines will be more than $150 for running a red light.

City officials say eight of 28 cameras have been installed so far.

Signs warning drivers about the cameras will be installed in the coming month. Once the cameras are activated next month, the city will send warnings with no fines for 30 days to the registered owners of vehicles photographed running red lights.

Starting Oct. 31, the city plans to start mailing tickets. Violations will carry fines of $158. Of that, $75 will go to the city and $83 to the state. The cameras are expected to generate $2 million in fines for the city next year.

Guess the cities can't pass up on a good thing - money flow in.

Time to start thinking about new leaders.

Tampa and cameras

The cities will know based on police reports the intersections and areas with the highest incidence of red light violations. Those areas will get installation first. I am surprised that they would incur cost to warn motorists who violate in the first month of activation.

Coordinates Emailed

I geocoded each of the 6 intersections & just emailed the list with coordinates to Jon.

This first group will go live Oct. 1, with warnings being issue until Oct. 31, at which time the fine will be $158.

Installed Cameras

The first set of cameras (already installed) are now included in the file.

I'll add the second batch as they go live in October.
