Need a reciept in ATL

Anybody in the Atlanta area who just purchased a Nuvi 660 in the last month, do you have a reciept for your unit that I could have a copy of? I purchased my unit used, and when I purchased it the person did not have the yellow card!! Everything else was there, so I did not think that it was hot. Well to get the unit unlocked for future up grades I need a copy of the reciept. So anybody out there willing to help a guy out?

Just e-mail me at at wvusquatch@yahoo.com

I'm not sure a recipt would help

Because I think Garmin knows what lot of serial numbers went to a particular retailer...and if you provided a receipt from one place, and they knew from the serial number that your particular unit was in a lot that went to a different retailer, they'd become rather suspicious.

Hot

"...so I did not think that it was hot."

So based on the way your worded you statement, you now realize the unit is HOT?

I do not think that it is hot, I was able to do the registration, page up to the yellow sheet. That was a week ago and no cops on the doorsteps. Person was just having some hard times. I have full contact info if it was to be hot.

If the previous owner registered the unit

Then they can call Garmin's support people, and have the registration transfered to you. It's really that simple. I upgraded to a Nuvi 660 recently, and my sister now has my old 350, and they transfered registration of said 350 to her with a phone call.

I was told by the support

I was told by the support person at garmin they would not do anything without the yellow card or reciept. I do not think that they registered the unit. I explained the situation, and they said that this would be the only way to get it unlocked. Look folks all I am trying to do is get the unit unlocked, for the future map upgrade this summer....

As I said...

If the person you bought it from had it registered, they can have the registration transfered to you. I know this can be done by Garmin support as I have done it.

I do not think that they registered the unit.

I hate to say this

But you may be S.O.L. - if your seller didn't register the unit, there's a chance they were not the 'original owner' if you get my drift...

call garmin

i had the same problem no yellow paper . call garmin give your serial number to them and they will give you the number you need .

I tried this and they said

I tried this and they said sorry we need a copy of the sales reciept. That I would have to fax it to them. I will try again, but think that the only way to do this is with a sales reciept.

.

Doesn't the person you purchased it from have the sales receipt?

Not that you did anything wrong, per se, but Garmin is trying to protect "us" from people using (or at least upgrading) stolen units.

Without the yellow sheet or a valid receipt, you are, unfortunately, most likely out of luck as far as upgrading.

That is why I am asking if anybody here in the Atlanta area would like to help out???? All I am trying to do is get it unlocked for the future map upgrade. You would think that I knocking off a bank or something....

Keep trying

I would call back every day. Be sure to get the name of the customer service person you are speaking with so you don't get the same person twice. Garmin proabbly has a who phone bank of customer service reps. One of them just might help you. Based on some of the posts appearing above, they have done this for others.

Not worth it to keep trying

If someone is the original owner, and they registered the unit, they can easily transfer records of the registration to another party - I've done that. What we have here is an instance where Squatch's seller apparently did not have the unit registered to them, and has none of the paperwork. From what I've heard, Garmin is very diligent in these matters, and will not register a unit for someone without evidence of a chain of custody from a legit retailer in the first place.

But providing you with a receipt that wasn't for the unit you are trying to unlock would be fraudulent. I don't think anyone wants to be part of something fraudulent.

I'm not trying to pass judgment on you, but I'm not sure that you grasp the severity of what you are asking. Garmin's procedures are in place for a reason.

I can tell that you are frustrated, but you are directing it in the wrong direction.

Again I'll ask, can't you get the receipt from the person from whom you purchased it? If not, perhaps you can get your money back from the person.

I AM SORRY HOW IS IT FRAUD?

I AM SORRY HOW IS IT FRAUD? I paid for the unit, and will be paying for the software. I mean I can choose to keep the unit as it is, and not have any problems. does unlocking the unit give you some secret backdoor pass to the VIP section of the world! Fruad would be where I would try to find a way to get the software or the unit for free. There have been plenty of people here that have just called garmin when they were not the orignally owners and got the software for free?

So once again I ask, anybody in Atl willing to help out?

This is Garmin's protection for the rest of us.

While your unit may not be stolen, the system is setup to prevent others from benefiting from stolen units. Both the registration receipt and the Garmin lock are for just this purpose.

We did have another member on this site a while back who had a unit that he claimed wasn't stolen and it was accidentally locked. He tried for over a week to obtain proof of ownership data from other members and then finally admitted that the unit was probably "hot".

So, while you may be honest and just caught in the system, I don't believe that members on this site should be involved. Your best bet is to convince the Garmin people or obtain additional info from the original owner.

This should also be a notice to other members that if you purchase a used GPSr, you should make sure that you have the original registration information, proof of purchase, and/or the unlock code.

Similar situation

I bought mine used at a pawn shop I frequent so I have a receipt from them. Will Garmin accept that?
It was in Marietta, Georgia. If they accept a pawn show receipt from me, they might do the same for you.
Where exactly in Atlanta did you purchase it? I might be able to help.

Yellow Paper

All this talk about the yellow paper or should I say "gold" card made me nervous. Do I have mine? Well, being prone to worry I had to go looking. Why worry? My wife throws out everything. Leave it anywhere and it's history. Well gold it is. I found it. I intend to copy the important numbers and put them is several "safe" places. Now, if I can only remeber where I put them. Jake

Original Receipt?

Sasquatch,

You haven't said if you can get the original receipt from the person you purchased it from. Did this person buy it new? Does he/she have the receipt from Circuit City or Best Buy or wherever he bought it from? I assume this is what Garmin is asking for.

Only if the Pawn Shop is an Authorized Garmin Retailer...

i think he's just annoyed that no one would just tell him "no, we can't help".

i agree, with everyone. it's like asking for a license key for something you've purchased. to give or not to give?

good luck to you bro, i hope you find what you're looking for.

I purchased mine from a

I purchased mine from a private person, and no they are not willing to give me a receipt. I did call garmin and ask them if the number was hot and they said no one has reported it. I called back a second time and asked if there was any way around this and still the answer was no. Plus if the person did not register the unit and do a private sale like this, and that person gave your a reciept, this they will not allow either! To easy to fake one!

I figured I would just make one using a reciept font and just make one for a radioshack that just recently closed in my area.....

Then on the other hand I might just leave it alone unless there is some major reason for the update!
