Directly, no

Indirectly, yes - in that usual TV viewing will give way to the media going ape-poo with 24-7 coverage... if you thought this week's earthquake coverage was over the top, you ain't seen nothin' yet.

Weather reporting on TV

I think they live for weather disasters.
To hear them talk you would think they are discribing their honeymoon.
First thing we had this week was the earthquake, now Hurricane Irene, hate to think whats next. Probably Locusts.
Hope we don't get the four guys on horseback.

Well here in FL we know that among the spaghetti models used by the hurricane center one is sponsored by Home Depot/Lowes and another by Publix/Win-Dixie, they tend to paint a gloomier track when compared to the other models.

Here in NYC

http://nyp.st/nrGRg5

The mayor is taking this very seriously. Sometime tomorrow he and the MTA will make a decision about suspending the subway and rail system in the 5 boroughs. If they do that it will be the first time ever that a decision to do it was made before a natural disaster has hit the city. This storm might be much more serious than any we have had since 1938 when over 600 people were killed on Long Island.

The Mayor will also make a recommendation about an evacuation for parts of the City.

This storm is no David Letterman joke smile

Stay safe, alert, use caution.

in preparation

OK my tips for the hurricane if you don’t have a generator.

1) Turn off the TV and Radio you don’t want to hear gloomy predictions.

2) 12 hrs before storm is forecast to hit the area set refrigerator lo lowest setting and leave it there until storm is over.

3) Make sure ice maker is making ice and store excess in plastic bags.

4) If freezer area is not packed with food fill it up with ice bags.

5) Plenty of beer on hand, milk spoils beer does not.

Precaution or Panic ?

As Hurricane Irene continued to travel up the East Coast, Mayor Bloomberg warned this afternoon that the storm is "very serious" and ordered a first-ever mandatory evacuation for all New Yorkers living in low-lying areas of the city.

Jittery MTA execs are shutting down the city’s entire mass transit system beginning at noon tomorrow to prep for Hurricane Irene, it was announced this afternoon.

The unprecedented shutdown will include subways, buses, Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad, and Access-A-Ride, officials said.

Bought gas for the generator. Got to keep my three sump pumps happy. Funny how the price of gas suddenly jumped back up.

Just remember... the

Just remember... the hurricane is a spiralling wind (akin to a vortex). I've been in a few: First it comes from one direction, then the calm as the eye hovers overhead, then it continues with winds and rains coming from the other direction. Be prepared for sudden return after the calm. Pray that it moves quickly onward and so does relatively less damage.

Be aware...

Be aware that the most dangerous winds are in the eye-wall, which is the first sudden thing to happen right after the amazing calm inside the eye in the center passes over.

The East Coast is like a Martini,
First it was shaken, Now it's being stirred.

Please pay attention and heed the warnings of your local community leaders. If they tell you to evacuate and you don't, you will have absolutely no one to blame but yourself if you get thumped by momma nature.

As of now it appears that we will get nothing more than a bad tropical storm. Kind of like what we had a few weeks ago when there was 7 inches of rain and high wind at Kennedy Airport.

As I am firm believer in the truth of the expression: I would rather have a gun and not need it, then need it and not have it.

Stay safe and dry.

OK in Raleigh

As I post this the storm is near to its closest approach to Raleigh. Some minor power outages and some trees down but overall going pretty well here. Reports from the Outer Banks are far worse.

Stay safe

Try to get printed maps to navigate if there are troubles getting GPS signal.

After the problems with the snow storms last year, he doesn't want to get caught again.
Now every time something happens they go all the way. He stopped mass transit early this afternoon. it is now almost 8pm and it is not bad out yet.
The tide behind my house is super high, but will start to go out soon. The morning tide will be the problem.

We live on the barrier

We live on the barrier island containing Long Beach, NY. A lot of the weather footage on the networks is being shot from my street except I'm three corners away from that location. We have a mandatory evacuation. This hurricane is hppening concurrently with a family extended weekend more inland. We did not bother to cancel since we already had a guaranteed place to stay.

Weather Hype

Whether the Weather is going to be bad or not, the media just loves a bid storm hype, to the point of ridiculous.

Last Labor Day, a "hurricane" was heading to Cape Cod...Except it petered out to barely a thunderstorm. All the the dire forecasts were replaced by live shots of a few drips and ripples in Chatham Harbor narrated by "meteorologists with crestfallen faces.

The stores love the overhype too, it clears the shelves and moves lots of batteries and milk. (What good is milk if there actually is a bad storm and power failures?)

What a bunch of BS

Howard Beach NY according to intellicast
http://www.intellicast.com/Local/Hourly.aspx?day=Tomorrow
zip code 11414 in the city on NY in Queens we can expect a maximum wind of 53 MPH for one hour tomorrow at 11AM. The media has nothing better to do than promote fear.

"Ceterum autem censeo, Carthaginem esse delendam" “When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny.”

Nothing yet...

It seems like nothing is going on in my neck of the woods. I am in upstate NY, 85 miles north of NYC (inland) so nothing but a little rain so far. My preparation for Irene was to clean my gutters razz

Family in Long Beach already evacuated. Family and friends in Westchester are ready for power outages (trees falling). Friends in NYC (midtown) are not that concerned and keeping an eye on the news "just in case".

My only concern is for potential tornadoes trailing this thing after it passes. Praying to Jesus to keep us all safe.

not a trivial storm...even though it's weakened somewhat

3 million people without power
• Category 1 Irene has 75 mph winds
• NYC landfall in next couple of hours
• Storm earlier came ashore in N.J.
• Main worry continues to be rain, flooding
• 'No way to get around' in NYC

MD is done with her

Winds maxed at around 2am Sun here in MD at the north end of D.C.

Lost power around 3:30 am. Pretty strong gusts considering we were about 100 mi inland of the eye! Could have been worse. Only 1 broken windshield from falling branches, no major trees down in my yard. All trashcans still tied to the tree. wink

On to you guys on N.J. coast and Long Island. Half the deaths so far have been from falling trees, branches so pour a Gin & Tonic and stay inside. Good Luck.

Well Irene is further north of us now. We have streets flooded in low lying areas and some trees down. I’m one of the lucky ones that have power and no structural damage. I think we’ll stay indoors and let the emergency crews do what they do best. I hope the rest of you guys are doing well. God bless.

We got some bad winds but no flooding in our area.Like I posted on on chit chat.Lost power Saturday and the neighbors with odd numbers had power Sunday night. We the unlucky ones with even numbers got it back today. You don't want to what I was thinking looking across the street seeing the lights on and me with a lantern cooking on the grill. Not really hot though for sleeping if you could stand the generators humming all night.

FL sure got lucky on this one.We thought about heading that way once we seen it was coming here but worried we would run into it. Finally watching the news some now.It is terrible what others farther north got.

We are not that far from Hatteras NC.Used to go there almost every weekend. They got hit hard in some areas there.HWY 12 washed out in one location.

Remember that Irene was still a serious storm, leaving millions without power, many homeless, and taking the lives of 45 people and counting. North Carolina was hit with the full force of a Category 3 hurricane; and Vermont is seeing some of the worst flooding in its history, with similar situations all over New England and the mid-Atlantic. In light of homes being washed off their foundations and people being swept from their cars, a little over-preparation seems a small price to pay for our safety.
