Garmin Streetpilot iPhone app

With all the talk about Garmin's new 2012 GPS units, there seems to be a bargain being ignored:

Garmin's Streetpilot iPhone app for $40

This runs on an iPhone, always has the latest maps (downloads as you go via the internet), has decent reviews.

Think about it - if you are carrying around a Garmin nuvi for GPS, an Apple iPod or iTouch for music, and a cell phone - you can reduce the clutter with an iPhone.

Sure, there are some negatives. I'd prefer to have the maps stored in the phone.

I just don't see many people paying $400 for the best stand-alone nuvi GPS, when Garmin sells the app for $40 ?

The StreetPilot app that downloads as you go is $59.99 in the app store...

The recently released StreetPilot Onboard, with full maps on the device is $39.99 for USA; $49.99 North America

I have the StreetPilot App - and I'd rather have my Nuvi765t compared to that app.

Rather have my 3790 than the app. Having the maps on the device really helps but there are other issues that make me keep the 3790.

I've tried a few...

I've tried a few of the iPhone Navigation apps. Actually, quite a few:

- MotionX: I really didn't like the layout
- Navigon: Nice layout but from a distance (like it was on my XM Skydock stalk near my dash) it was hard to read. I thought they put too much information on the screen using text that was too small.
- Garmin's original app. It worked well except if you were out in the middle of nowhere (no service) or in some busy area (like leaving some major event) where everyone else was using the network.
- TomTom: I think this one was the best that I tried for iPhone. Maps looked good. The interface was good. The map data was on board so you weren't reliant on the network.

The problem I had with all of these was that I spent more time fooling around with my phone than I would with an external GPS. Basically the deal was: select GPS; select XM Radio to listen to music; go back to GPS; Music is sucking, go back to XM to change a channel; Go to iPod; Go back to GPS;

Basically I'd spend a lot of time being distracted trying to interface with the iPhone and it's various apps. I much prefer the: GPS is on the dash doing it's thing. My iPhone is in it's dock doing it's thing. No need to app swap and be distracted.
