Power went out 1/2 thru map update on device

Power went out during map update and now Garmin Lifetime Updater says I don't have enough space to install the update. Should I move the .img files to my computer and try again?

Call Garmin

I would call Garmin tech support. The updater program may be confused. They will walk you through whatever can be done by phone. If not successful the unit can be sent back.

map update

If you call garmin and tell them what did happened to you they will help you my sister gps it crash her gps run out of disk space she call them garmin direct her to a web site it re format the gps and create a fresh installation. One thing good about Garmin they help you, Tom Tom customer support you are on your own.

Leave the base maps alone.

You should only move the gmapprom.img, gmapprom, sum, gmapprom.unl and gmapprom.gma to your PC. If you have gmapsupp.img, sum, unl or gma, move those too. Those Supplimental map files are sometimes mistakenly sent from MapSource to your device by highlighting them with the Map Tool. That was typically done with the older devices that couldn't hold all the map data.

Don't remove any gmapbmap.xxx files as those are the base maps.

I would plug the GPS back into the PC and check the 'disk' for file system errors. You can do that by right-clicking on the Garmin drive that appears in 'My Computer' and selecting Properties, then Tools and then Check Now. (assuming you use Windows).

Once thats complete, try your update again. An option to REINSTALL should be on your screen when you visit MyGarmin.com and click Manage Maps.

One thing, as a general

One thing, as a general comment, is that it's always good to make an image of the Garmin unit before changes and store it somewhere on your computer / back it up.

I've completely restored my Garmin from an image before without problems. Then I just apply the fixes and new maps and I'm back up and running.

I moved all the gmapprom.*

I moved all the gmapprom.* files off the device and the map update worked fine. Problem is update left little space on the device. After some reading it appears the 14XX line is becoming too small for map updates. So, after 2 weeks of ownership it went back.

I know have a 2460LMT and it's a much better device than the 1490LMT with 4X the memory.

basic computer common sense

I made a backup of all the files that my GPS exposed to the PC interface as soon as I got the device. And I user that wording because there is more information on your GPS that you can't access, backup, or replace.

But more importantly, I know that power can go out and I run my computer (and my Internet modem and router) on a UPS. If people don't care enough about their systems to do that they seem to me to be accepting that things like this will happen.
