Transferring Favorites

How can I transfer my Favorites to a new Garmin GPS?

many ways

The one I would use is MapSource but there are other programs than can do the transfer.

Connect your GPS to the computer and copy the file Current.gpx from the Garmin to your desktop. Rename the file to Temp.gpx. Connect your new unit and copy the file into the gpx directory on your new unit. When the new unit is turned on, it will import the favorites.

easy does it

John it is easy but dangerous if the individual is not proficient working with files and folders, I will advice doing it your way with a warning.

Backup

If you do a backup of both units before you do anything, you have protection.

You need to know how to backup anyway.

If you need instruction, see

Yes indeed!

Agreed. I always use Mapsource to transfer Favorites (as well as to serve as a computer backup for Favorites should the GPS ever crash or lose the current favorites--and occasionally to tinker with Favorites in terms of icons, spelling changes, etc.)

dkm..., if you don't have Mapsource on your computer now but want it, you can install it for free when you update your current GPS map or with this technique:

Mapsource

When I try this, I get a message that a previous version of Mapsource was not found on my computer and the installation terminates.

Is that because I have never bought any maps? I only did my one free update after I got my unit a year and a half ago.

Basecamp?

Are you getting an error installing Basecamp or Garmin Training Center? Note that the Mapsource link won't work unless you've first installed Basecamp or Training Center.

@ CraigW

Installing BaseCamp did indeed let me install Mapsource.

I really cannot remember if I ever had installed either package when I got my unit.

I can not really check whether or not I did because I had a hard drive failure last fall and concentrated (once I got a new computer) only on getting back the data files for a lawsuit I was involved in. I did the bear minimum in terms of getting software back since my last backup "image" was a month old.

Fortunately, my data was being backed up every day so I was able to recover there.
