one great gadget

Finally broke down and bought a garmin nuvi 1450LMT because we had to drive into NYC last week for the first time in about 40 years, and last time Dad was driving!

Anyway, in automobile mode it performed near flawlessly, routing us around a traffic jam on I80, getting a position fix within a half block of exiting the Lincoln Tunnel, and getting us around Manhattan and through Greenwich Village and across the Brooklyn Bridge w/o error. We left late Friday afternoon to exit the Holland Tunnel, and the traffic delay estimate was only 15 min, even though it took +2 hrs to crawl across town. The only other glitch was a long viaduct across Newark, where it became confused when we crossed roads below, and lost its nav brain for a few minutes. Once off the viaduct it restored itself, and we kept on trucking.

In pedestrian mode performance in the city was somewhat less than that of the Iphone w/ the NYC nav app. The Nuvi was a battery hog, and tended to lose pos fixes on the sidewalk. I think it may work best out in the street - in the center of those urban canyons.

My Detroit Tigers are currently in first place in the American League Central. In recent years, they have not played good enough in the second half of the season to make the playoffs. Hope that this year is different. Go Tigers !
