Garmin Basecamp Update

Thanks for the heads up. I'll update right away.

BaseCamp

I've used MapSource for years and know nothing about BaseCamp. Can BaseCamp be used on Nuvi's and is it the same idea as MapSource? Is one better then the other? Thanks!

You can

You can use either Mapsource or BaseCamp as they will provide the same functions. Basecamp has at least one major advantage over Mapsource and that's that you don't need the actual maps on your computer. If you attach your Nuvi to your PC and fire up BaseCamp it will read and use the maps that are preinstalled on the GPS. This is a big advantage, particularly for folks that have Nuvi's that have never had a map update or for those that have done an update but didn't use the option to store a copy of the maps on their PC.

Overall, once you understand the differences in the user interface between the two programs, I think you'll find that BaseCamp is more feature rich.

I have always used mapsource

I have always used mapsource and download the maps to my computer during a map update. I will have to definitely try basecamp.

Major Update Of Garmin's Basecamp Available

I don't know how I missed it, but I was completely unaware of BaseCamp. I have used MapSource for several years now, but somehow I did not get the word about BaseCamp until now. Will this also work with the StreetPilot 2610/2720/2730/2820 series or will this only work with Garmin Nuvis that have a USB connection?

Thanks for the info.

Suspect that Basecamp will work with the StreetPilot but I don't have personal experience with anything other than the Nuvi.

For folks that haven't heard of BaseCamp, or haven't used it before, here is the Garmin Webpage that will give you additional information on this product:

Is Basecamp used only for

Is Basecamp used only for Topo maps? Will it work for Coty Navigator?

Indeed

Indeed it will.

Way KOOL!

I always thought Basecamp was for the TOPO units.

I just downloaded it and was running it the first time with my GPS connected. I was looking to transfer the data and realized its already there in the DataView window, maps and all!

I then saw another data drive with infomation in it. I started to click on it to see what it was and realized I had my cell phone connected also. It also loaded all my cell phone pictures. Everytime I selected one of my photos it placed a thumb print of the photo on the map where it was taken. Ask for Properties and you get the lat & lon readouts

I've only had it for 5 minutes and I like it!

That;s the problem

That's the problem with the darn software, it's so feature rich it takes you forever to find all the good stuff in it. grin

Update not on App store for Mac yet.

As of today the Mac app store is not showing the update. It is still showing v3.1.4 as the most recent. As pointed out and linked by the OP you can download v3.2.1 straight from Garmin.

Garmin Basecamp

I think that I, too, thought this was only for handheld geocaching GPS units. Will this only work with the GPS connected to the computer then?

It will work

It will work with any map that you have on your computer just like Mapsource. If you connect your GPS to the computer, it will use the maps you have installed there. Also it will use any maps that are installed on a Memory Card and inserted in your Nuvi, in a card reader or inserted in the card slot on your PC.

It apparently uses data from

It apparently uses data from any and everything source it can find either on or connected to the PC. It found my cell phone picture when it was connected and it found all of my old maps (forgot I still had them on the PC).

Basecamp Update

Thaks for the alert on the update.

I'll D/L it ASAP.

Much better, but ..

This version adds some nice features but it's not time to throw MapSource away just yet..

BaseCamp still won't let you split your map sets up & save them like MapSource will, and

It doesn't let you edit some of the waypoint gpx field items like Description, Address, Phone. It does preserve those fields on import & export if they already exist though.

When creating a waypoint from a map feature, BaseCamp only captures the name or street address info as the name, where MapSource populates the name and address info fields.

[edit-] A correction to the above. Oddly enough gpx address info IS added if you create a waypoint from map features if you create waypoints from "found" searches.. , but NOT if you create them with a right-click on the map feature! ??

f.y.i.

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

Must try this

I too have never heard of BaseCamp...I will give it a shot.

School

It sounds like there are a few of us that haven't heard of it and need to go to BaseCamp school.

Oh well, lets see what we can break and then fix.

Even in the Mac App Store--

I downloaded Base Camp on one machine manually -- the App Store just popped up telling me I had an update available on a different machine. This is working out nicely.

Finding Addresses

Finding Addresses do you need the address in middle of the screen? I would have thought you could just enter the city and search for the street. Similar to MapSource.

Why (the kids always ask why) has garmin made two map programs almost the same, why haven't they taken both programs and kept all the different features and made them one.

--
Today is a gift, that's why they call it the present...

BaseCamp vs. MapSource

Garmin Rep told me recently to use Map Source with my Nuvi 2460LMT not Base Camp. Map Source is geared more for Automobile while Base Camp was designed for hand held GPS.
