760 freezes

Am I the only one this happens to? When using my 760 (Volvo) GPS, I will be driving along not really paying attention to the Nuvi, thinking all is well with the world, and suddenly realizing the thing has frozen 10 miles back. I have used the "Updater" and updated like a good boy should, and still this continues to happen every now and again...what next, call Garmin?

Hard reset?

If it's happened more than once in the past few weeks, I suggest a hard reset, unless you've already done one:

I think I needed to do a reset once after a long-ago firmware update on my 750 which should be similar to your 760.

I have to...

reboot the darned thing manually...I suppose I should contact Garmin...

The nuvi 760 has been rock solid. For it to freeze there must be a reason.

Check this thread out. CurtHinson's nuvi locked up at specific locations. A lot of the thread is about a firmware update or rollback, but it wasn't that. Alandb and Juggernaut found the cause, which was that the icon size in pixels for a file of POIs was too large. Whenever that icon was to pop up on the screen, the nuvi crashed.

Your problem is your firmware. V4.9, the latest and greatest, fixed a problem with the battery meter but created a problem with freezes. I have the same problem with my 750 and rolling back to v4.8 fixed it. Download v4.8 and roll back to the earlier version. Do a search here for rolling back the firmware for the website that has the older firmware versions.

Thanks to all...

I shall give it a try!! It's great having this site...thanks again, will get back to let you know of the outcome!!

Love my built in....

I like my Garmin but love my 2007 Lexus Nav system...have not had one single issue and it works all the time without any glitches...garmin portables are good but just so many problems as you can see just from this website....

The previous bookmark I had for this 404'd, they seem to have moved to here:

The site I used is:

Scroll down to your model number and click the link.

Today my 660......

I had a route active (~600 miles, about 200 miles into the route... Wife added a Waypoint (rest area) and shortly after that, a Traffic delay was recieved and prompted us as such....

And then the 660 locked up....

We power cycled the 660, and it remembered the route but not the waypoint, and the traffic delay remained.....

No further issues after that...

A 2689LMT in both our cars that we love... and a Nuvi 660 with Lifetime Maps that we have had literally forever.... And a 2011 Ford Escape with Nav System that is totally ignored!

Not Uncommon

Myself, my brother and a friend all have Nuvi 760's and we all have had freezing. (All the units were purchased at different times.) They have experienced the problem more than me.

My brother and I are currently on firmware 4.9 but freezing has happened going back several releasess. I have never noticed an improvement with new updates.

The POI .bmp files on all three units do not exceed the recommended max. (I know because I maintain all three.)

The biggest difference between my brother's unit and mine is that he is zoomed in much more than I am. I now considering the idea that it is more likely to freeze when at a closer zoom level, but I have no way to confirm that. Does it happen to you when zoomed in?

I also have a newer version of the maps than he does. However, my friend is at the same level as me, yet has his fair share of freeze ups.

Couple other suggestions:
- Do a defrag (Sorry, but I do not remember the steps)

- Do a hard reset as previously suggested.

The bottom line is Garmin puts out crummy software for their consumer products. I think they have more models than they can properly suppport, that are replaced to frequently, and then rushed to market before throughly testing. I also have a Garmin Oregon and the supporting BaseCamp software is a disaster. Their priority seems to be on the next product, not fixing the buggy stuff already released.

I just hope they do a better job on their aviation units! I do not think it would be much fun to be IFR and have your Garmin freeze up.

I will look into how to defrag...

All of you defrag believers need to get your flame-throwers out and fired up....A defrag won't help solve your problem. The reality is that flash memory decides for itself where the data is written and if you do a defrag then the data is just as fragmented as before. Since the access time is the same for any memory location in flash memory, it doesn't matter where the data is stored.

A hard reset MIGHT help but it didn't for me. Since I rolled back to 4.8, my unit has not frozen once. I rolled back shortly after 4.9 was released.

Yikes,I have also had

Yikes,

I have also had freezes.

I'm rolling back my 750 to firmware 4.8
hope it eliminates the freezes.

thanks,

Howard

My 760 is over two

years old and never had any issues of any kind. The firmware is version 4.9 and all the other updates are up-to-date, including maps (have LTM). Love my 760. grin

Success

Yesterday my 750 had two freeze-ups - I drove 40 miles.

Today with a rollback to version 4.8 I drove the same 40 mile route with no freezes.

Success.

ditto

Same thing happened today with my 5 wk. old 2350. And the odd thing is when I unplugged it, it did not respond. Touch it, no response. Power button, no response. I guess I should call Garmin, they'll probably tell me it's user error. Nobody seems to acknowledge flaws in products anymore--where's Ralph Nader these days? smile

yes, hard reset

I have a 765t that used to have plobrems with either freezing, or rebooting. I did a hard reset, and a firmware update. One or t other fixed it. When doing a hard reset, if you care about your favorites, you need to be sure to back them up first!

Unless you are the lead sled dog, the view never changes. I is retard... every day is Saturday! I still use the Garmin 3590 LMT even tho I upgraded to the Garmin 61 LMT. Bigger screen is not always better in my opinion.

Both

Both of my Garmins (750 & 755T) have froze and rebooted. I talked to Garmin help and had e-mail conversations with them and what solved my problem was the removal of all the voice files and replaceing them with new ones. They seem to think the file were corrupt and caused the system to become unstable. I replaced them and the GPSs worked fine till the last map update. I replaced them after the first incident and they have been fine ever since.

I had not heard that before. I wonder why v4.8 can handle the supposedly corrupt voice files while v4.9 can't? I will try that fix in the next few days but it might be a couple of weeks before I can report on it. Thanks JFCTexas.
