Help! Merge new POIs in Favorites!

Hi POI-Factory,

My father has a nuvi 1370. I made a backup of Current.gpx and then I made a master reset. As expected, all Favorites are gone, but I still have the original Current.gpx.

I tried to copy the old currnet.gpx to Temp.gpx in the GPX folder. I tried any other name.gpx. I tried to overwrite Current.gpx. All those tests and I cannot merge the old Favorites with the default ones.

What I am doing wrong? Is it different with the 1370? Maybe I will learn something and update EPE to fix the issue as well.

Thanks,

Turbo

.

Do you have MapSource?

.

Have you tried opening them in EPE, and then individually saving each as a .csv, opening Excel, and copy and paste the files into one?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you here?

It has always been my understanding that current.gpx was an 'output' file that got generated every time you booted up the Nuvi. It would appear that the current.gpx file you see now is the newly created file and not the 'original' one. If you don't have any of your old favorites then you have the a new current.gpx file on the 1350 as that is the files that your favorites are stored in. But with all your work on EPE I'm sure I'm not telling you anything you didn't already know. grin

Now why you can't merge the backup copy to the newly created current.gpx is a weird issue. If you've taken the old/original current.gpx file and renamed it to Temp.gpz or anything.gpx then once you put that file in the GPX folder it should merge the data into a new current.gpx file when you reboot the Nuvi.

I have see it happen with my 1490 that I needed to reboot the unit 2 or 3 times before the favorites showed up. So you may want to try that.

You need 12 or 13 Favorites First

Hey TurboCCC,

the 13xx series is a pretty strange animal until it has at least 12 or 13 Favorites already on the unit. So, You may not be able to add Favorites that have categories or any favorites at all by placing a *.gpx file in the same directory until there already 12 or 13 onboard. I was not able to on my friends 1300.

Also, I've noticed that after a master reset or at anytime you can not directly minipulate the current.gpx file or place a previous copy of current.gpx in its place without confusing the GPS system causing bigger problems. I know because I've done this. As the previous poster said, it is an output only file and that is how the operating system keeps track of it, by the output it sends to it.

My friend with the 1300 was not even able to use Mapsource to transfer favorites to the unit until after 12 were already there, which he did with GARMIN Support on the phone.

So unfortunately after a master reset I think you need to manually enter 12 Favorites then it starts to behave the way we would expect it to.

As MM suggested see if Mpasource will do it.If you do not have a lot of favorites.Save the current gpx as a custom poi file. Then go down the list and save each manually as a favorite. You can try 12 first then try the temp.gpx trick. If not you may have to do all manually from the custom poi list.Using temp.gpx works for me but some of the newer models including your Fathers requires at leas 12 to do categories. That may be what is throwing the money wrench into copying them to the gpx folder.

a VERY stupid animal

yes, the 13xx is a very stupid anumal. I added 16 Favorites, but it still does not merge any gpx files to Current.gpx no matter the file name I use.

I was so confident. I told my father "do not worry", "I know what I am doing", "I won't lose your Favorites"... And here I go, I lost them. At least, I have a backup but I can't find the way to merge them back.

Edit: my dad does not have MapSource. He has 93 Favorites. Saving them back from Custom POI to Favorites will take some time, but it is a good suggestion.

no go

After many attemps, only one of the POI was merged. Only the first one. None of the others were merged. There has to be a reason for that, but I do not know which one yet.

.

Why not just install MapSource?

Run it back through EPE and

Run it back through EPE and take all the categories out before merging back to gps.

half good

I sorted all POIs before saving back. 50% of the POIs seems to have been saved as Favorites. Maybe there is something wrong with the Current.gpx backup file. I will need to investigate more.

Thanks for your help.

Sounds like you are on to

Sounds like you are on to something now.Better get it fixed or you may get a spanking.

After you manually add the given number of Favorites where you can create categories you might have to manually create the first category for the GPS to understand.

Tell your dad Happy Father's Day from the POI-Factory.

Thanks all

I am back home. Thanks for all the suggestions. I will probably have a closer look to the original Current.gpx. There is something in the second POI that was "indigest" to the GPS.

Note: I did not have time to install MapSource. With the Father's Day, I did not have time to do more.
