Newbie question again (walking distance)

confused Planning a trip, and loading those places on to my Garmin - - here is the question.

Because some of our time we will be walking is there a way to determine the walking distance from say, where the ship docks to a saved POI, to see if it is close enough to walk to? We are taking a cruise to Hawaii, 5 Islands, some we will be there for 12 hours, some half that, so we will walk on the shorter stops and rent a car on the others, I wanted to see how much we could fit in within walking distance, but see no point in putting in a POI that ends up being 8 miles from the boat dock...

Any help would be appreciated.

When you 1st pull up the file of your poi's you will get the poi's showing distance and direction. That is as the crow flies. If you select an individual one and tap "GO" then you will get a route with the time and distance. The time will be based on the speed that is built in to the maps as driving a car.

I believe some GPS unit allow for a "pedestrian" mode, but I am not 100% sure of that.

First, save the ship's docking point (coordinates) as a Favourite.

Then, put your GPS into simulation mode, and choose the 'Pedestrian' option.

Open the dock fave, tap 'Map', and then 'Set Location'.

From there, you can choose other POI's, or Faves and it will tell you the distance, and time walking.

first off ...

First off, welcome to the site.

Secondly you asked:

While many units have the ability to work in pedestrian mode, when you look for locations it always reports the distance as being in a straight line - no matter the mode. You can select one, and the unit should then tell you the driving (or walking) distance from your current location to the destination.

Box Car, at the 'Go' screen it will give you actual data for the route in any mode...

Many Thanks

Wow - this is just awesome, I have been doing what you said, and now I can see that many sites I entered are way too far to walk to - so that helps with our planning.

I appreciate this group, even though I am new, it is the first place I go to get answers.

Thanks so much!

Glad we could help.
