gpx files will not load (xml extension added on mac)

New Garmin gps - first day in the POI Factory. csv files seem to load without any problems. However, the Garmin POI Loader (2.2.1) will not load any gpx files. When downloading, the files go straight to the Downloads folder with ".xml" added. The csv files that are downloaded do not have this extension added. I tried taking the xml off of the file name - still did not work. Is there something else that I need to be doing to get the gpx files to load?

try this

I think you are clicking on the gpx button and then clicking on Open. You should click on the Save button in the File Download box instead of the open button.

When you click on csv or gpx

When you click on csv or gpx in the pois you want you need to save them and not open them. Once they are in your download location you use poi loader to load them to the gps.

Since you say you are using poi loader version 2.2.1 I believe that is for the mac but the process should be the same whether it be the PC version or mac version.

Welcome to the poi factory.
We will get you straightened out though.

Save Target As

Use this option when downloading, then the files should be in your download folder if that is where you are chosing to store them.

The files you download should have a .gpx or .csv extension when downloaded properly.

SUGGESTION - when you really get into this addiction as the rest of us have, you may want to create a new folder to start saving the POI files to. Then you can start creating sub-folders for the different categories of POI files you download to help organize things a little. I use sub-folders like FOOD, STORES, SCENIC, etc. In time you will find what works for you, but for now just have fun getting your first files loaded and having fun.

Mac

It's a Mac and/or browser issue.

I don't have a Mac so I can only point you to this thread:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30458
and also say that you should be able to just change the .xml extension to .gpx and it should work with POILoader.

No File Download Box

I really appreciate the responses and help. I am using an iMac with Snow Leopard. When I click on the poi file to download it, I do not get a Download Box, which means there is no Save or Open choice. The download goes immediately to the Download folder on my computer, which is where all downloads go. I never get a Save/Open choice. Some open on their own and some do not - these I open manually, then save them where I want them. When I open them manually, I get a box that has options to 'Open' or 'Show Web Page' - no 'Save' option here, either. Any other ideas?

Again, thanks a bunch!

I did not realize it was a

I did not realize it was a MAC. Like JD4x4 said in the post before yours. just rename the .xml to .gpx after it's downloaded.

Problem Solved

I've been a Mac user for nearly 20 years. I also have a Dell, but use the Dell only when I have no other choice!

I suspected that Safari might be doing something different, and the various comments told me to go back and dig deeper. Since I am new to POI World, I had wanted to check to see if there was something that I missed.

The file name, upon download, as it sat in the Downloads folder was: US Bank.gpx.xml

I had earlier tried deleting xml from the file name in the Downloads folder as that process has worked on files from other programs. However, this did not work in this instance. Apparently, I had not changed the file name deep down where it really mattered.

What did the trick was going to the file in question in the downloads folder and clicking once on the file name to bring up the info in the Preview window to the right. Then, in the Preview window, I clicked on the 'More Info' button. This brought up a separate file info window. There is a 'Name & Extension' box about halfway down. It was there that I deleted '.xml' at the end of the file name. I had a feeling that this would work this time as I got a 'confirmation' window -- 'Are you sure you want to ...........?'

I'll go and try loading a couple more gpx files to make sure that this works.

Again, thanks for everyone's help!

Solution Verified

I went back and downloaded two more gpx files. Using the process described earlier, I had no problem getting them onto my Garmin. While in there, I found a few others that looked good.

Thanks to everyone who put in their two cents worth - they all added up and helped me figure it out.

Glad we could help

You will now become addicted and be in the forums on a regular basis.

Don't go to all that trouble

I had the same problem over a year ago and worked with Garmin tech to find the problem using Safari to download .gpx files. Going in to change the extension is too much trouble. Download the latest version of Firefox from Mozella for Mac and use it to download all your POI files. You don't have to change anything for either .csv or .gpx and Garmin's POI loader for Mac has no problem. It's the way the current version of Safari is handling .xml files. Didn't have a problem with older version of Safari, but Apple must've changed something during last two upgrades. Good luck!

Might Try Firefox

Thanks for the advice. So far, I have resisted Firefox because I like Safari so much, maybe due to dissatisfactions with Windows Explorer. This may be the kick-start I need to go ahead and try Firefox.

Delete the .xml

As others have said above just highlight the .xml extension and hit delete to remove it. You will get a prompt that ask are you sure you want to change the format to .gpx. After that the poi loader will load the file as expected.

Kewl

Glad you got it sorted. And thanks for updating the original post with that link.

It's always tough searching for old threads & faqs, etc if you don't know the right keywords, eh?
