Sharing Routes

I was thinking that since my Garmin Street Pilot 2730 is capable of storing up to 50 routes, that it might be nice to post and share particularly interesting and scenic routes from around the country much like we do with POI files. Here in Minnesota a popular drive is along the scenic north shore of western Lake Superior north of Duluth MN.

I found some information here at
http://www.travelbygps.com/TourGuide.php In that webpage some suggested tours are:

Tourism (Historic tours, Bus Tours, "Ghost" tours, ...
Campus Tours
Real Estate (Exclusive Listings, Tour of Homes, ...)
Interpretive Park Guides
Road Rallies
Hotel (concierge) tours
Relocation, Orientation

I also gather that some of the compatible Garmin units are:

Nüvi 350
Nüvi 360
Nüvi 660
StreetPilot 2730
StreetPilot 2820
StreetPilot 7200
StreetPilot 7500

(Although not mentioned, I wonder if the Garmin Nuvi 650 would also work for this?)

If anybody here has done this, how well does this work out? Also, is anyone else here interested in creating something like this and sharing them?

Yes I'm interested

A great resource for sharing routes (motorcycles) is

Routes are very specific to the map product they were created for. For instance if you create a route with City Navigator NA v8, it won't be valid with City Navigator NA v9. It's usually better to share tracks instead since they are independent of map product.

Sharing Routes

I was unaware of that. Thank you very much for the information.

Route vs track

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Track = bread cums you left while traveling
Route = the planned direction given by a GPS to take you from your current to your destination location. Therefore, route from another gps may not work with a different gps.

Correct, which is why

Correct, which is why sharing tracks is better than sharing routes.

This has me intrigued...

Though I can see the logic in the statement that map products vary, wouldn't a track potentially vary by even more and possibly not match any known road map?

Presumably, a GPS that can follow a pre-determined route, just has to snap them to nearest plausible road - like it does a Waypoint/Poi?

Sharing Maps

I have the Nuvi 680, with MSN Direct traffic which is supposed to change the route depending on traffic conditions. So, the routes that have been changed by congestion (Southern California area) may not be the best ones to share.
