POI Megafile for Garmin?

I'm sure many here are familiar the the 'POI Megafile' that is available for use in MS Streets & Trips. It contains an incredible number of groups of POIs. And there is at least one .csv version of it available. BUT, as a single .csv file, if I load it into my Garmin I'll get just one category of POIs (thousands of POIs appearing at once). So, has anyone found/seen/heard of all the INDIVIDUAL POI categories in the Megafile being available as separate .csv files for loading into a Garmin? BTW, I know that there are many of the sub groups in the Megafile available for download here, searched out and downloaded one at a time. I'm hoping that there might be a single ZIP out there of the individual files so that when loaded into my Garmin I will see them as individual POI categories.
Thanks for any help that might be out there.

Explain ?

Can you explain a little more about this 'megafile' and how to obtain it from S&T? I for one, have never heard about it. Thanks !

mega file

If you are looking for CSV magafile go here:

rvers-other-travelers

Note the 3 lines above are the full address. Sorry, I didn't know how to have it display the entire address without breaking it into 3 lines.

You can download the zip file Nov2010Megfile.zip (1595KB) for the CSV file which is 6468KB. You will need a newer version of Excel than 2003 to fit all of the 86,904 lines into it since 2003 has a max line entry of 65,536. Also the CSV file has 6 columns and needs some doctoring for your use.

Note also that their files are not kept up anywhere near as well as what you will find on POI Factory. You will find a lot of the items in the MegaFile are dated back to the mid 2000 years.

It was a fun file to play with though.

Hope this helps.

More on the S&T POI Megafile

RE: Can you explain a little more...
Sure. I'll assume you are not familiar with Microsoft Streets & Trips so this whole thing might make sense to anyone reading it later. S&T version 2010 (and now 2011) added a new feature that is very, very nice. There has always been the ability to add 'Pushpin' markers to the S&T maps. But they all appeared all the time on the screen. A 'Pushpin' could be any point you wanted it to be, like a POI. But if you were to load a file of whole bunch of 'Pushpins'(POIs) they would always be displayed, really cluttering the map. The new feature added to version 2010 was the ability to display ONLY the 'Pushpins' you wanted to see! So, someone built a Megafile (really big) of a whole bunch of individual POI files, in S&T, each POI file an idividual 'Pushpin' set. Then it was saved as a S&T .est file. Once downloaded it can be opened in S&T 2010. Then you can select the specific 'Pushpin'/POI set you want to see and only that set displays on the map.
Here is a link to one online source

The POI Megafile was originally posted through the Discovery Owners website and is still there and updated there. BUT, just today, I downloaded the latest version from Discovery and it is NOT as good (at least for me) as the previous one I have from last fall, major catagories have been dropped. I don't know if this was deliberate or a mistake, but the entire 'Public Camping' section has been left out.
There is a .csv file version out there but first, it has truncated data and second, since a single file it would load into my Garmin as just one POI file. That would be a mess on the Garmin screen or in a search. If trying to find a Walmart I'd see every other POI, regardless of what is was, at the same time. That wouldn't work. That's why I posted my question asking if anyone had seen a collection of individual .csv files that made up the Megafile.

POI Megafile

Thanks for the response. I'd already found that .csv version of the Megafile and it would be a mess to try to use in my Garmin, everything in a single file. You're right, the files here at POI factory are a better answer for the GPS unit, I have downloaded everything that is of interest to me and can load them into the Garmin and find them by the subject/file name when I need them on the road. Thanks again.

POI Megafile -DiscoveryOwners versus LaptopGPSWorld

Hi Starwagen,

The Public campground POI collections are available only in the POI Megafile that comes from LaptopGPSWorld.com. The DiscoveryOwners version is a subset of the other.

September version was just updated and there is nothing from the mid-2000s as was mentioned before.
