Where is your Best Auto Repair Shop??

My son went out of state the other day and his car broke down. I went to help him and had to get his car towed to a gasstation to get his car fixed. Since we had NY licence plates, I was told that I got ripped off for the price..

What I am thinking is to get everyones favorte Auto repair spots and put them in a poi, This way, If someone needs one, Just look it up and can be more trusted than just finding the one nearest you.

What do you think?

I am very very picky when it comes to auto mechanics. I drive a Gen 1 Ford Taurus SHO and not everyone can work on my engine. These guys are the best. The youngest mechanic has I think 10 years experience. Smart, honest, experienced mechanics with tons of experience.

We had one of those until the transmission blew up (it was a '94 3.2L automatic, may have been a Gen 2). Great car, but the automatic transmission was pretty much crap.

The best place in this area was unfortunately, a dealer. Bob Bell Ford on Richie Highway in Glen Burnie. There is/was a mechanic there named Marcello - he owned at least two of them and knew them inside and out. Car was a serious pain to work on... I replaced the thermostat and diagnosed/replaced the camshaft position sensor myself along with a few other relatively minor repairs (O2 sensors, etc.) but when the crankshaft position sensor went out - it went straight to Marcello.

I think I'd rather replace a heater core than an SHO crank sensor, and that's pretty bad...

- Phil

Yeah, the Gen 2 automatic transmission is very picky. If I had one, I'd replace the tranny fluid every 10K miles.

Replacing the heater core on the SHO? Simple. Just remove the entire car around the heater core. It's about $20 for the heater core and $800 in labor.

Kudos to you for replacing the camshaft position sensor and the O2 sensor yourself. With all the tight spaces in the engine bay, there is a T-shirt: "I Gave Blood Today - I Worked On My SHO!"

Did we do before YouTube lol

I have a 2007 BMW and got the dreaded ABS trifecta, read the codes and confirmed. This is common and also afflicts BMW bikes, abs pump (aka dsc hydro) has a flawed design. It's a $4,200 job at the dealer.

Went online, someone posted the entire job. Sent the unit out to ID to be repaired @ $249, with a 5 yr. warranty. I had to buy fluid, some line wrenches, and the dealer software (because air cannot be bled from the pump the normal ways, i.e. stepping on pedal or with a motive bleeder), and a motive. So it cost me just under $500 to DIY, but I also have the software and tools to keep. Someone who already had that stuff woulda done it in under $300.

p.s. if they question is more directed to an outside shop, well in our area, AAA owns and runs its own garages (AAA MidAtlantic) and you don't have to be a member to use them. They seem legit. Otherwise, an indie who allows customer provided parts is another way to cap the costs. Otherwise, seems like costs have no upper bound. A person can innocently drive in for brakes and it's $600 per axle on an ordinary car, or $1000 for an alternator, crazy these days..

Bet you never hear this anymore: "I'll get you next time."

When I was about 22, I got ripped off by some old dude likely 35 or so haha (I'm older than that today). Sold me a car with blown head gaskets but masked it by pouring junk in the radiator. Car had no power in about a week, and I ended up buying a used motor/tranny installed at a salvage yard for $900. Well, I drove the car for 8 years! And, it began a friendship, most of the time I went back to the salvage yard to get something fixed, this new friend didn't charge me. His son really was upset all the time, but hey I didn't have much money so I genuinely appreciated it.

He had a sign in the garage: Labor rates: $24/hr. $28/hr. if you watch, $35/hr. if you help

Look at that number...$24? HAHA

Denton Texas RV repair

Thanks for your post, I have archived the info and look forward to the POI of repair shops. It's a real crap shoot when you have no personal recommendations during a trip.

Pederson Repair & Fabrication

This last one is where I get state inspections. They do a lot of work on large vehicles (commercial trucks) so might be a place to consider with a large RV.
