Garmin registery

I tried to update the maps on my Zumo 450 today. Garmin tells me my unit is registered to someone else. I bought it on Ebay and have no way to contact the previous owner to have them delete their registration on Garmin's site. Is there any way to update this thing?

From Ebay

This may be of no ultimate help but follow this link

What I got from it is that you may only be able to "use" the unit but not update it.

Please keep us posted.

.

The OP could also contact Garmin, and see what they can do. After all, they do have the owner's info.

Previous similar case

Juggernaut, seems to me that we have heard of a similar case where the person did get Garmin to change the registration. I just could not locate it.

This is another one of those subjects where I hope someone will produce a FAQ after this particular issue is resolved.

I tried a number of searches on the Garmin site but never got to anything useful.

One thing for certain is that the OP will need to have his serial number when he calls Garmin.

previous owner has to log into their account and delete the unit

The previous owner has to log into their account and delete that unit from their registered units. Then the new owner will be able to register it in their account.

If you cannot get the previous owner to delete it you are out of luck.

Not saying you bought a

Not saying you bought a "hot" unit ... but when you buy a used GPS off eBAY ... how do you know that it is not a stolen GPS?

If the GPS is registered to John Doe, and you bought it from John Doe, then John Doe should be able to update the Garmin registration.

However, if you bought the GPS off eBay from Jim Smith and the GPS is registered to John Doe ... well, you probably bought a stolen GPS and are SOL.

We Have To Be Careful

I expect that a majority of the units, that are offered online are legit. Simply someone that has upgraded to something better or newer.

Unfortunately, there are also crooks out there. I guess we really have no choice except to insist that the seller go online, in your presence and cancel any registration. That gets tricky.

A legal seller might be nervous about letting a stranger that much access to his home and a crook will have an excuse for not letting you. The only solution might be to meet at a Starbucks, etc. that has a free WiFi. Bring your own laptop and the connection cable and hook up in neutral territory.

Kind of complicated for something, you're probably buying for $50.

With the cost of GPS dropping, it may not be worth buying used.

Thanks to sbc5151 for bringing this to the forum. It's much appreciated.

Thanks to all

I did manage to dredge up the seller this evening. I sent her an email about the issue and she was kind enough to reply. Long story short, she got divorced and doesn't speak to her ex-husband who bought it new. So.... I guess I am SOL. Lesson learned-don't buy used. Thanks again to all for the input.

Call Garmin

Don't give up - try to contact Garmin and tell them what you have told us.

Husband might want it back too

He might have forgot she has it and want it back, loves great, lol

Been there

Yea.... I did that, the woman I talked with at Garmin had no sympathy for me. Anyone interested in a 2006 Zumo 450, slightly outdated?
