GPX or CSV

I have a Nuvi 2460LMT and have been trying to upload some of the great POI files I've found here. The folder I created has a mix of GPX and CSV files, when I use the Garmin POI Loader it hangs up at around 29%.

I can't seem to find out whether it's OK to mix these files or will just one or the other work in my 2460. The unti just came out this month and there isn't much info about it out there on the web yet.

Sorry if this isn't the correct forum, I'm new to uploading POIs but not to GPS.

Thanks in advance.

No problem having both gpx and csv

No problem having both gpx and csv files.Poiloader treats them the same.May be problem with a file or files you loaded. What Poiloader version are you using?Try running Poiloader with just the csv files and see if you have a problem with one of them.Same with gpx. Here is info on custom pois http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721

In case you haven't already done this. You can download owners manual at http://static.garmincdn.com/pumac/nuvi_2200_2300_2400_EN_OM....

The basis difference between

The basis difference between those file formats is that .gpx has the capability of displaying the phone number to be dialed through the device which you can't do with .csv files and always .gpx files will be larger than .csv files.

Thanks for the replies I

Thanks for the replies

I tried loading seperatly, the GPX had no trouble, the CSV now hangs at 19%, with 151 of them (CSV) it's going to be tough to figure out which one it is.

Thanks again.

Can't tell which version of the loader I have, a wizard window comes up with no way of finding out, although I downloaded it from Garmin this morning.

The problem you are having with POI Loader hanging at 29% is due to one or more of the files having a problem. As 2.6.1 is fast compared to earlier versions, take all the files out of your folder and add them back one at a time until you find the problem file or files.

When you find the bad file(s) let us know and we'll try to troubleshoot the problem so you can get them all loaded.

Oh, welcome to the forum!

Try This

Are you running the latest POI Loader from Garmin? If so, there were some problems with that loader if I recall. I believe people were having problems with Col C having commas in it. Anyway, see if you can get the release of POI Loader before the latest one. I can't remember the release number and I am at work. Maybe someone from here can tell you that and point you to it. Just a thought.

As you follow charlesd45's instructions

As you follow charlesd45's instructions, be aware that you can "rename" (in your GPS itself) the file that POILoader creates (and if you are using 2.60, my understanding is that it permits you to do this directly). The file will otherwise be poi.gpi

So, you could name (or within your GPS, rename) the .csv files as something like csvfiles.gpi. Likewise for .gpx files.

What this would let you do is to do some bracketing with all of the custom files you have downloaded in order to get to the one (or several) that must have errors in them.

Whenever you find a POI file with an error, you should then contact the owner of the file. You do this by going to the page from which the file was downloaded and looking for the "submitted by" line directly under the file name. The owner's name will be in blue and if you click on it, you will be taken to a screen which has a "Contact" button.

Welcome aboard - sorry you are having problems but most of us have gone thru similar trials. Hopefully we all learn something.

If you ran WebUpdater you should have the the 2.61.You can also download it at http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99... .

fixed in 2.6.1

The problem was with version 2.6.0 and was fixed in 2.6.1 which is the current version. The older version (2.5.4?) reported which file had errors but this one just hangs.

OK I found the bad file,

Comedy_Clubs_USA.csv

Once removed I was able to load both GPX & CSV files from the same folder to my Nuvi.

Thanks for the suggestions and help.

On another note while my POIs were uploading I got a few "data error" messages, something like line 86 and then a path to /Pennsylvania Waterfalls.cvs. There was about 6 or 7 of them and they said everything before the error (line?) in question will be written but nothing after.

You could use Extra Poi

You could use Extra Poi Editor a tool you will need and save the csv files as a Garmin gpx.A temp fix until the author corrects them. You can download Extra Poi Editor at http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor . When you download the program if you get message about OCX file missing scroll down on the main page and under troubleshooting you will find the Extra Poi Editor Installer that you will need to download.

@soberbyker

Since you are using gpx files you may want to look at building the distance into the gpx file.If you plan to use a alert for any of them. That way you can run poiloader in express mode instead of manual see http://www.poi-factory.com/node/28521

This POI stuff is all new to

This POI stuff is all new to me, until this thread I didn't know the difference between GPX & CSV, I was blindly up loading stuff that appealed to me, GPX, CSV didn't matter, I just hit whatever was connected to Garmin. I'll have to look into the inner workings of the GPX when I have time.

Thanks all for the help and insight.

CSV, GPX or POI file convertion or transfer

Before uploading any CSV, GPX or POI files from my PC to my Garmin I under take the following procedure.

On my PC I create one folder named CSV, one named GPX and one named POI.

I delete any previous copied files from the above corresponding CSV, GPX and POI PC file folders.

Depending upon which type of file I require to upload to my Garmin I copy the single file from my PC file storage area to one of the appropriate above PC file folders.

At any one time it is advisable to store only one CSV, GPX or POI file per above PC file folder

When directed to do so by the chosen PC program that either converts or uploads the file(s) to my Garmin I direct the PC program to access the desired PC file from the above corresponding PC file folders.

a lot of work

You seem to be doing a lot of work for no reason. I have one folder (on my desktop if you're interested) which has several subfolders. I then copy or update either the CSV or GPX file in my POI folder as needed. When I'm done with my updating of my input files I simply run POI Loader against my POI folder and load the entire mess containing both CSV and GPX files at one time. On this particular computer the update takes about 90 seconds for 170K different locations read, converted and transferred.

Don't make extra work for yourself, and certainly not for others

NHS Steve, you are advocating way too much work. There is just no reason to think that you need to load each and every file separately.

On the other hand, I don't advocate loading all of the files at once, it can take way too long if you have a lot of POIs and just occasionally update one file.

My approach is to break the files into logical groups and load them as a set. Then rename the resulting file on the GPS so that the next POI you load does not over write it.

For example, I have a folder of restaurants and load all of them at once. I load the RLC file separately and store it under a different name in the GPS. That way, when I want to change the red light file I don't need to update every POI on my GPS, but the number of POI files on the GPS is still very manageable.

I do a single folder with sub-folders now. I use to do individual files for a few different reasons but it was a lot of work. I do however run POI Loader to a folder on my PC hard drive because I use the same file for multiple GPSs. Once I connect each GPS I just have to drag and drop the new xxxx.gpi update file to it instead of running POI Loader each time.
