Nuvi 2xx powering down

My parents called me from the road and said their Nuvi 2xx (Sorry I forgot at the moment, may be a 205) would just power down by itself (Screen would just go black) then in a few moments would go through the power up process again, all by itself. I was with them before and this happened, and i noticed they were using their phone adapter instead of the Garmin power adapter. When we switched it to Garmin, it worked fine. That was like a year ago and no problems again until just now.

So That's what I had them check, and they verified this time it is the Garmin one. So I had them just unplug it and go on batterries and it was fine then.

So I was just wondering if anyone has an idea what could be happening? If it were just losing power from the adapter, it would just give a warning "Power lost - would you like to keep the unit on?" But it just goes black.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Did they check the fuse on

Did they check the fuse on the power adapter?
I done a search on Garmin and this is what came up..

Why will my nuvi 200 or 205 series device not power on?
If the device does not power on it could be a result of an extremely low battery. Please ensure that the device is receiving a charge while it is connected to the vehicle power cable. If the battery is receiving power from the vehicle power cable then the battery icon (located next to the time) would disappear from the Main Menu.

If the unit does not power on while attached to the vehicle power cable please follow steps from below to perform a soft reset:

Connect the device to an external power source1
Slide and hold the power key to the on position for 15 seconds
The device should power on.

Notes:

Preferably the vehicle power cable or a USB cable from a computer
Some of the older Nuvi 200 series will have a reset button on the bottom of the device. It can be found on the bottom of the device on the same sticker that the serial number is printed on.

Thanks for the reply,

Thanks for the reply, Charles. It seems it was getting power, since I asked my mom to check the battery power indicator, and while it was plugged in, it wasn't there. When I had them unplug it from the power cable, it showed 3/4 full on the battery indicator, and then it stayed on just fine.

I'm leaning towards something in the power cable. I'll ask them how it behaves when plugged into the USB on the computer. Maybe have them jiggle the wire a little.

usb power

It is likely that it was not receiving enough power from the USB connection to keep the battery charged and run the device. If the battery is old, it may never completely finish a charge cycle and/or consume more electricity, which may exceed that particular USB power supply to provide.

USB needs longer time to fully charge

Electrical power is the rate at which energy is transferd. It is true that USB ports will transfer energy slower (ie at a lower power level) but they will transfer sufficient energy provided that enough time is allowed.
