Map Color Goes Gray

I have noticed that in some areas the daytime colors of the map turn gray. I an not sure if this indicates something or not. I thought that it might be showing that it is an urban area as that is where this has happened in two different cities - but then in other areas of that same city it goes back to the usual day time colors. Anyone know?

This is a 1490T

You're probably seeing the traffic map. The map's colors are removed to highlight the traffic instances which are displayed in red (severe), yellow (moderate) and green (flowing normally).

easy to fix

just press the traffic icon, then select normal map.

Same Same

This is why I like this place "POI Factory". Just wonder around and you learn stuff. Case in point grey screen.

Not so sure it has anything

Not so sure it has anything to do with traffic - the traffic icon was green each time that this happened - and there was no traffic on the road.

And when my 1490 traffic icon has turned yellow or red there has been no change in map color.

Robert

If you touch the icon and choose the traffic map, it will stay grey until you change it back.

Viewing the traffic map

On page 36 of your owners manual, it explains the traffic map as DorkusNimrod & cameotabby have stated.

Traffic gray screen

If you are navigating the GPS can sometimes see traffic pretty far ahead along your route. More than once I have had the screen go gray with no traffic problems in view anywhere on the map. At the same time I heard on the radio about traffic further along my route but that it is in the process of being cleared. A liitle bit later after never seeing traffic on the gray screen it turns back to the normal map and there is no accident later when I reach the accident location.

Also, while not navigating but traveling on an interstate I have had the map show the gray screen but saw no traffic ahead. I kept zooming out and I could finally see it. Lucky for me I was exiting before the traffic.

So my experience it while navigating or not navigating the GPS can see traffic ahead pretty far sometimes, you just have to look for it.

I guess it could be a strange problem. If you suspect that there really isn't traffic ahead but the gray screen is coming on try going into settings and turning off Traffic and see if it still happens.

So the screen sometimes goes

So the screen sometimes goes grsy when there is traffic on the route and sometimes doesn't? I would understand this if each time my traffic icon went red the screen also turned gray - but it doesn't. Looking at the manual on page 36 there is nothing about the screen going gray - just the change in icon colors. And I have seen the traffic map with standard map colors showing red and yellow delay areas along the route. And when my screen has turned gray it does not stay gray - keep driving along the same route and it goes back to standard map colors.

Turning Grey

I turned gray many years ago but my 1450 usually says "traffic ahead" to tell me that the receiver is getting traffic information and then the screen turns gray. I usually find the information misleading and do not detour.

The screen doesn't have to turn gray if the icon goes red or yellow. The traffic could be far enough away that it isn't near enough to be drawn on the screen anytime soon. When mine changes gray the traffic (red or yellow lines) are close to coming on the screen.

If you think you have a strange gray screen problem I can only suggest turning off traffic for a day or 2 and see if the gray screen continues.

Robert - as many people have tried to tell you, its probably traffic related. If you don't believe them then turn off your traffic for a week and see if the screen turns gray.

Grey Screen

Yup....it's the traffic map it is showing. The traffic map is a grey screen when activated.
