Need new GPS for wife......

Ok, well due to mother in law in hospital, we've done alot of interstate traveling to "the big city" (we live in rural area) and the wife has realized GPS isn't good enough, seeings how she hates it already because we have to pay for new maps. She happen to see one on tv and started looking on net and found out that there are ones that show what lane to be in and has to have one! So here I come for help!!!

So.... Things she would like

BIG SCREEN
Lifetime maps!/traffic ok too
Lane selection
Speak road names
I can download POI
Changable cars

I have done some looking and from first glance the 2460 that is coming out looks like the ticket, anyone have any other advice to lead me in some good directions

Thanks!

The Tom Toms have better junction views based on my experience>>

I have a Garmin 1490 and a Tom Tom 340XLS that I use for my car and motorcycle (respectively)...the Garmin graphics are FAR superior to the TT but the TT has the better lane assist/junction view technology hands down...you can get a TT 540 with T2S, lane assist and lifetime maps and that may be the way to go despite the poorer graphics. My girl has a TT 540XXL that I got her before the lifetime maps were available and she loves it.

Because the wife "hates" the GPS to begin with, there is little chance she would really use one if you got one for her. My wife's complaint is "It's too complicated."

But to address your questions, define "BIG SCREEN." Do you mean something larger than the 3.5 inch screen, or larger than the 4.3" widescreen models?

Lane selection as Garmin calls it is Lane Assist. These are little directional arrows in the upper left corner that show which lane or lanes to be in for the next turn. This is different than Junction View which is a picture of an upcoming intersection showing the road signs and a colored arrow. Junction View is not available for all junctions and where it is available it is only for certain roads.

"Speaks street names" is on most units with the exception of the low end entry-level ones. Make certain the box says "Speaks Street Names" or it isn't there. Letters after a Garmin unit model number tell you some of the features. W means wide (4.3") screen, T is for traffic and LM for lifetime maps. You can download and change vehicle icons on all units.

As the travel appears to be between the house and hospital mainly, you want to set these as "Favorites" so the screen touches are at a minimum.

Garmin 3790LMT

Meets all your requirements plus has one more thing you wife would probably really love. Speech recognition - you can talk to tell your GPS the destination.

She hates the current GPS

She hates the current GPS 255w because, She doesn't like fact we have to pay for new maps (she wants current), it doesn't tell her on expressway where to get off like the one she saw. Think those are her 2 only real complaints about current one

Yes she doesn't want the small screen ones, like the 3.5 incher's

As for the technical aspect of it, she seems to be ok with that. The more she uses the current one the more familiar she gets with it.

Thanks for the input so far

Does she hate maps too!

My wife really objected to the whole GPS thing too but had to start driving to and from different places in the city for medical reasons. I can only afford so many days off to drive her.

My wife has never, as long as I know (26 years so far), ever picked up a map either to go somewhere. She relied on someone telling her how to get there, and would blame them if she got lost. She hates anything technical, even the 3 remotes I have next to my recliner.

I got her a 765T. Wide screen, lane assist, speaks street names, and the big thing that helped her - 3D maps. For some reason 2D just didn't do it for her. Probably the same reason she never used a map. She now goes anywhere, never asks anyone for directions and has even asked me to put the Harley Davidson Dealers POI on her unit so she can stop by and buy me a shirt or something when she's on the go.

She has learned how to put in the addresses and I put a big red suburban vehicle on screen for her.

You just have to find out what feature will catch her attention and let her realize that its a pretty good tool.

It might be Lane Assist that will catch her attention. The right unit and I'm sure she'll come around. All of the Garmins are pretty close to the same as far as putting in addresses and going.

I recently had to setup categories for my wife's growing Favorite entries and I just got a shirt from Space Coast Harley in Coco Beach brought back to PA.

Good Luck!

The features you are looking

The features you are looking for are pretty basic. I bought my son a 265WT for Christmas for about $125. It adds bluetooth to your spec list. Is that of interest? My 760 and 885t both have bluetooth with a remote microphone which helps noticably. Both also have MP3 playback. If you don't already have a music source for the long drives the older Garmins do this well. On trips, I set the navigation for the destination, listen to music stored on a SD car (mini SD in the 885t) and if I get a phone call it comes in over the Garmin.

I find the turn instructions in the upper left to be a significant improvement but the older ones, like my 760, will give you the next turn information if you touch the lower right while navigating. It will go forward several steps too.

The Garmins with lifetime maps are not available everywhere but you can easily get a card for lifetime maps for any Garmin from Amazon for about $60. If you can find one you like with this feature for less that would be good but if not, it might be best to just buy both the GPS and the upgrade.

Jim

been very pleased with my

been very pleased with my 755. I don't know if they have a lifetime maps version.

maps

What's kind of interesting about the "lifetime maps" notion is in the smartphone world, that's free, constant, and consistent anyway. Google maps is always being updated in the android world. Performance-wise, I'm still wondering if an external gps is needed anymore...I find my nuvi 660 collects dust more and more!

Thanks all for more info! I

Thanks all for more info! I did the Garmin selection thing, that is how I came up with the GPS coming out soon. Was looking for some more possible options out there. I'll look into the lifetime maps on Amazon, I think from Garmin they are like 90$. As far as smart phone, I use my GPS 1000x more than my Iphone just for the fact that if your not in 3g it a bit difficult and wife has a flip phone, she hasn't cared to upgrade to the "smart"phone yet. This is kinda funny because last night, she asked me if I ordered her a new GPS yet grin, told her I was working on it. Thanks all

My choice would be a Nuvi 1450

The 1450 has Lane Assist, Junction View (really cool), text-to-speech, and a wide screen. I doesn't have traffic or bluetooth.
I bought mine in July of 2010 from Amazon.com for about $160 and I spent another $70 or so on lifetime map updates. (I wouldn't consider getting a GPSr and not getting lifetime maps.) I also got a couple of accessories so the whole thing ended up costing about $260, give or take.

I'd pick a 755t

I love my 755t; cheap, esp. when you find a refurb.

2460 Is Nice

I have a 2460 and its nice. I like the voice command and also the dual orientation. If you are going north/south and like the Northup view, its nice to have the GPS vertical.

2460LMT Pop-ups

I've had this unit for a week or so now and love it except one thing.

Every now and then a pop-up ad will appear, for best Western, Red Lobster, Olive Garden. I asked Garmin about this, which normally only pops up when idle or near idle, and they said it's part of the free traffic receiver. The only way to turn the pop-ups off is to turn off the traffic feature altogether.

Other than that it's a very nice unit. I like being able to use the unit as a Blue-toothooth phone as well. Plus if you have the right phone to pair with your phone book transfers into the GPS, mine doesn't but my wifes does.

I've had a 330c, and still have a Zumo for my motorcycle, they just keep getting better.

Generally speaking the Garmin traffic feature is useless. Traffic incidents may or may not appear and they are usually not timely. So you might actually be better off just disabling that feature.

I've been noticing that's it's not as acurate as I would've liked and I live in an area where is pretty much always on.

I leave it on. It gives me a chuckle. It either tells me I am in traffic at a standstill (I am still moving fine), alerts me to an area I already went through (also no traffic), or alerts me to nothing and I am definately in a traffic jam. It is pretty much useless.

Nuvi 2460LMT.

yes, i wholeheartedly agree

yes, i wholeheartedly agree about the traffic feature in general -- not accurate. i've had it be spot on and alert me to an accident and it's exactly where it says it should be, and then i've had it miss big traffic issues and road closures like the LA marathon. And I'm not clear if it's suppose to reroute you around traffic or just let you know there's traffic. definitely some bugs to work out.

Garmin 2450

If you are not interested in the traffic feature which I personally don't like the new Garmin 2450LM (lifetime maps)is a great unit. You can pick it up from the Walmart website and I believe Amazon for $198...I understand it's the latest and greatest from Garmin..

1450

My wife and I bought the Gamin 1450 (plain version, not the LMT) and was VERY pleased. The Lane Assist came in very handy on our recent trip to Springfield, IL. We used the Brit voice ("Daniel") for kicks...it was fun to hear him say "Now arriving at RAM-u-DA Inn" (sounded like "Ram A Duh" instead of "Ruh-Maw-Dah" wink

1490T

Cannot go wrong with a Garmin 1490T unless you are headed west into St. Louis going for Tulsa.

If you are in a traffic jam that the unit does pick up click on the traffic icon, you'll have a choice tdetouror around it if you want.

It talks to you, has speech recog. and lane assist, shows you which lane to be in in busy interstate junctions.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you are saying, but the 2460 screen only displays in landscape mode. It will of course display north up or track up in landscape mode.
