OpenStreetMap with topography contours

I'm a big fan of OpenStreetMap, and have found that it often contains more detailed data in many areas. The big drawback seems to be street numbering... street numbers are usually missing so you can't ask for a route from 123 Green Spring Lane to 456 Willow Grove Way. For that, you still need the Garmin map. OSM will route you from one location to another, however, so you can get to the street you need, at least.

Has anyone successfully prepared an OSM file with topography contours from the following how to:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Topographic_maps_for_garm...

I deviated slightly from the howto in that I used one of the DaveH Lambertus OSM files (http://daveh.dev.openstreetmap.org/garmin/Lambertus/) and added the contours to that, but I'm not seeing them on the resulting map. What concerns me is the "tick the elevation contours box" in the instructions for downloading the tiles, but at the same time it also says that you can get the OSM data in other ways.

My big question is, why do you have to tick the "elevation contours" box when srtm2osm is supposed to download the elevation data from NASA's server itself? That appeared to work, generating an appropriately-sized file.

I realize that I'm getting into some heavier stuff here, but if anyone else has "boldly gone..." before, then I'd really like to hear about it. I must be missing something.

Also, as I write this I have to say that it's nice to have a place where I can post a question like this and actually have some hope of getting an answer. A big thank you to Mr. and Mrs. POI as well as everyone else.

Cheers,

- Phil
