Traveling from fla to las vegas, april 2011 by harley.
Any route and stop suggestions welcome.
Thanks

If it were me on a bike

I would take I-40 to I-17S around Flagstaff down to I-10 around Phoenix. Visit Sedona, AZ just South of Flagstaff. Take I-10 all the way to FL visiting San Antonio, TX, especially the Riverwalk. Also possibly visit Tombstone, AZ and, of course, New Orleans.

Happy Travels

I-10 routing should be warmer weather for a biker in April.

Sorry, I guess I have dyslexia. I read, in my mind, that you were travelling LV to FL. Reverse directions !

Highway 89A

If you should be going North in AZ from say I10, DEFINITELY make your way over to Wickenburg (NE of Phoenix) then grab highway 89A up through Prescott, Jerome, Sedona, and into Flagstaff. By far one of my most FAVORITE bike routes. Diverse scenery (desert to mountains to pines to red rocks, etc) and a terrifically windy road up and down the mountain valleys. Jerome is a really cool ghost town turned hippie art village very popular with bikers now-a-days. April will be the tailend of spring in AZ, but depending on the rains earlier in the year, could result in beautiful plant life desert and high country.

Have fun!

The Biker Road

Although I-10 might be a bit warmer in April, I'm sure you're aware that Route 66 parallels I-40 in the northern portion of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. I would think that this would be a pilgramage for any biker exclaim

Taos, Santa Fe and Los Alamos are must-sees in NM, and the Grand Canyon is just an hour north of Williams AZ. And then there is the drive from Seligman to Laughlin, considered a classic journey for a Harley rider. Stop off at Oatman for the Old West gunfight before heading up to Vegas through the Hoover Dam. The new Tillman Bridge is open at the Dam, so the traffic should be bearable!

Keep dry.

+1 on Taos, Santa Fe and Route 66 :) >>>

If you are feeling very adventurous, I recommend NM Route 152 from Caballos to Silver City (some hairy overlooks but just gorgeous)...have a great safe trip!

Time's the Issue

Of all the trips I've taken on my Wing, the best ones were connecting the points of interest with secondary roads. The highways will get you there faster, but all you'll remember is constant speeds & no twisties. Take the time.

Have a great trip.

Thanks to all for the back road and other tips. I try to stay OFF the interstates. "It's the journey NOT the detestation". I've done the four corners in 07 going clockwise from Colorado Springs. After returning home in the Catskill mountains of NY, I discovered I'd missed a few too many things.
This time I'll try going counter clockwise from Las Vegas.
Looking to see some new places and experience some new roads. The twisties and the mountains are the greatest.
All info is much appreciated.
Again thanks, Jim

Pot holes

Heading to Vegas this Saturday from Canada. Just need to watch out for big pot holes. One up here in Vulcan AB swallowed a truck. It wouldn't be nice if you hit it on a bike.

Chicago to Miami

Taking a road trip from Chicago to Miami. Even though I can travel the route with my eyes close I'm taking my Garmin Nuvi's to compare features.
I'm taking my Garmin Nuvi 3490lmt and 3790lmt to compare travel times, routes, and most important the 3490's HD traffic vs the traffic on the 3790.

Both units have the same map version, latest firmware, and same settings. I'll post my findings on December 19th.

I traveled from Chicago to

I traveled from Chicago to Miami with both the Garmin 3790 LMT and the 3490LMT.

Route: both the same

ETA: The 3790 had me arriving 30 minutes faster at the beginning of the trip but became 10 minutes towards the end of the trip.

Traffic: The 3490 HD traffic was more accurate and had more updates. Both were accurate but the 3490 had more detail and better distance estimates to the conditions.
The HD got reception in all cities.

Conclusion: Both are great units but the HD traffic on the 3490 had more alerts, better description.

Lane guidance: better on the 3490 because it told me what lane to be in, and it told me which direction the highway ramp was on. The 3790 was vague some of the time.

Map detail: about the same but I preferred the 3490

If you have questions just reply to this post.

state roads

Many of the state roads in texas are really well maintained, have little traffic, interesting little towns, and create a better trip. If I was traveling for fun, and not just to get there as fast a possible, I would look for options of using as many state highways as possible.

I travel from the Chicago area to Orlando FL. a few times a year and the traffic feature with my Garmin is very useful around the Atlanta GA area.
