Whatever set you decide on get four and even though initial cost will be high, put them on their own rims.

If you live in an area where there are Les Schwab Tire Service Centers give them a call. They will know what is the best tire for your type of car.

ADVICE...

cool

NOT trying to be FUNNY but Dead Serious!!!

THE BEST Tire in snow is the one that stays parked until things get better.... If you don't have an emergency, stay off the roads until the roads or the weather clears. Rubber and Ice is a "Accident waiting to happen!"

There is NO such thing as a Better Tire!

Your BETTER TIRE can not see BLACK ICE and neither can you!

I have 18 tires on my rig costing over $400.00 each... Bigger and Better than yours and I am SHUT DOWN NOW IN DALLAS because on this day.... THE ICE is BIGGER AND BETTER AND BADDER than my Rig and 18 years of experience!!!

Don't be a FOOL... No such thing!

Wisdom is needed here... Not a High dollar tire sold to a FOOL!

The folks at Les Schwab have always gone the extra mile (pun intended) for me and my family.

Honestly, I don't even think of any other tire/brake/battery place.

Of course, your millage may vary.

Second this too....

Goodyear

They used to make great tires, but they sold me a set for my pickup that were unsatisfactory when winter came. Now I buy the house brand at the tire shop... My g/f has Goodyears on her Scion and they are not great but pretty good.

I agree on all counts. Stay off the roads if you can, slow down and drive on Michelin X Ice.

The storm isn't supposed to hit my part of Southern Ontario until after Midnight tonight and continue through the day.

Forecast is 20-30 cm, or 8" to 12" if you're in the US. However, the only thing I'll believe is when I get the snow blower out and start blowing. Forecasters have "occasionally" been wrong. 20-30 turns into 5 on more than a few occasions.

be careful

be careful...
a good snow tire not necessary good when it is not snowing.

Slow down beats everything

Few years back, a group of my friends went to the mountain to ski.

The first and only car got into accident was a 4wd with very good traction control and highly rated snow tires. Why? A careless driver with excess speed.

So, SLOW DOWN, pay extra attention on the road, then put on snow chains if necessary. it beats everything else.

Carbide!

Carbide studs are the only way to go! Black ice be damned. smile

Best tire in snow

Dunlop winter sport are amazing in run flat tire for BMW

Siping

Staying home is the best option, but a lot of us don't have that choice. So we have to settle for the second best option. sad

I've heard lots of good things about Blizzak tires. The downside is that they do horrible in the summer months, so you need to either have the summer tires remounted, or better yet, have an extra set of wheels to mount the summer and winter tires. Lots of people in Colorado switch between winter and summer sets of wheels.

I'm too lazy and too cheap to buy extra set of wheels, so I looked around for a half-way decent all-year tires. I found good reviews on a certain M+S tires, but when I talked to the local tire dealership, they thought my M+S tires had sufficient tread, and I shouldn't have as much trouble as I described with my 4WD Chevy Tahoe.

They suggested "siping" the tires first. That's where they make cuts to give the tires extra tread edges. I don't know if it's worth anything, but I thought $52 was a lot better to try out before I spent $820 for a new set of "mud and snow." Yes, it could be a bulk of bovine biproducts, but I was willing to lose the money before I drop some serious dough.

I'll keep everyone posted about how they do after the next heavy snow.

This site will be fairly useful. If you are looking for an All-Season tire that is excellent in the snow and all year I'd recommend Goodyear Assurance Tripletred.

All Seasons are a viable choice

This gets debated a lot on some BMW websites I follow. There are generally two schools of thought. One group, my impression is mostly younger people, say that you need the best tire possible for your high performance car so get winter tires, preferably on their own rims. The other school of thought, which I subscribe to, have several decades of successful experience with all season tires. If you read the reviews of all season versus snow versus summer tires you find out quickly that snow tires are only best in snow. They are not best in wet weather in the winter and are worst on dry pavement, even in the winter. I lived in snow country most of my life but the days driving in snow were always limited. Wet was more common than snow and dry was pretty common too.

The difference between snow and all season in snow is about 25% more traction for snow tires. In other words, your stopping distance from a given speed will be about 25% longer with all season tires. This can be offset by going about 5 mph slower. The difference between summer and snow is about 100%. So all season are much closer to snow than they are summer in snow. All season are the best in wet in the tests I've seen and close to the summer on dry.

No tire makes up for the conditions as has been noted. But if you take it easy and stay away from the worst conditions, my several decade experience indicates all seasons will get it done. When my bimmer tires require replacement in a few months, my plan is to install Continental DWS ultra performance all season tires.

4wd's still have to stop, alot people who drive them do not appreciate this. I have a 4wd and keep it in 2wd until 4wd is required, NOT on the highways the temptation to speed is too great.

4x4's think they can do all.

Many times I have witnessed how 4x4's think they can go anywhere, do anything, and worst of all SPEED. I have been witness to them speeding by me on a highway to only wind up in the ditch furthur down the road.

After a couple of snow storms here, I've noticed that my 4x4 handles a lot better with siped tires.

But still far worse than on dry pavement.
