No Description Multi Line

I am trying to create POIs for Massage Envy but the Description section doesn't want to display as multi line on my zumo 660 though it looks perfect in EPE v4.88. I tried 4 col csv and gpx formats. I also tried POILoaders 2.5.4 and 2.6.0 with the same results. I switched the csv file from text to hex edit mode with a program called UltraEdit and saw that the "0D 0A" were present at the end of every line they should have been.

Is it just the Garmin that doesn't understand multiline only in the DEscription field? All other fields (address, city, phone, etc.) seem to work fine. In the example below everything below the Phone # displays as 1 continuous line on the MORE screen only.

try this in a csv file

Copy the following and paste it into a csv file. When viewed in notepad, it should appear as a single long line (if word wrap is turned off). Direct PoiLoader to the file.

-75.296913,40.009107,Ardmore #0734 SPA,"44 Greenfield Ave|Ardmore|PA 19003|Phone:(484) 572-2000||Signature Services|Facial|Hot Stone Therapy||Located in the Ardmore Plaza on Lancaster Avenue and Greenfield Avenue"

Note that the "pipe" character (shift backslash)is used as a line break.

Experiment a bit

You may have to experiment a bit to find the line feed character that works on your unit. This was written before someone discovered that the 'pipe' | chr worked on some units, but have a look at this faq:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/21274

On my 295W the pipe chr doesn't work as a line feed, it displays. I've had success on my 200W, 765T, and 295W with adding
anyplace I want a new line. This string seems to be the most 'universal'.

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

The pipe character did not

The pipe character did not work. It displayed on the screen. I see another suggestion to use . I will try that tonight.

In EPE everything is entered in the proper field with all of the extra entered in the Description field.

I will experiment again tonight and hopefully find something that will work for everyone.

In EPE

In EPE you can also set the line feed chr for both gpx and csv files.. under 'Options', 'Preferences' (or ctrl+P).
Try
since I think it works with most units and on most nuvi/zumo screens (like both 'Go' and 'More').

(I know that you typed
in your post here but it didn't show up. Don't let that confuse you. It's another story..)

Line break thread

There is quite a discussion on line breaks here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/23417

This post in that thread is where I got the notion that a pipe character would work with the 660:

If you are the type person who appreciates a neat, orderly and easy to read “Go!” page, then you will surely be interested in the following table:

Unit/Line break needed
255W/
260W/
350/
660/pipe (|) or LF
750/pipe (|) or LF
755T/
765T/LF
760/pipe (|) or LF
780/pipe (|) or LF
2720/pipe* (|) or LF
C330/LF
C340/LF
C550/LF

* Effects a break, but character shows on display.
“LF” is the invisible control character otherwise known as “ALT+ENTER”.
It’s easy to convert from one type break to another using TurboCCC’s Extra_POI_Editor V 3.84 or later linked above.

Please let us know which type line break your unit likes if it is not included above.

Same Units, Different screens, sometimes different display

What I found when I wrote the faq I linked to above, is that with the same units the eol that works on one screen doesn't always work on another screen. Like 'Go' vs 'More'.

I'd love to get better feedback on what works on units that I don't have to experiment with so I can revise the faq as needed. But I haven't had any so far. In the near future I think I'll revise the test file I posted to include the pipe chr and maybe that will help.

Also noteworthy is the difference between gpx and csv files, and how they display on the various unit screens. The op mentioned gpx address info, and on all of the units I think the address displays on the 'Go' screen with line breaks 'built-in' when using a gpx file. Not so if you're fudging it in csv. The 'More' screen is what the op had issues with, and in both csv and gpx that is one distinct field (Col D, or Comment and/or Description).
does the trick for me ???

the works for my zumo 660. The zumo 660 appears to act similar to JD4x4's 765T (I think that was 1 of his units).

The pipe char just displayed and did nothing.

With GPX format using the address & phone number, with properly formatted line breaks, are displayed on the GO screen. On the MORE screen everything is also now properly formatted and the address and phone number follow the Description field.

With csv format using there is nothing on the GO screen. On the MORE screen everything displays, with proper line breaks, with the address and phone number display before the Description field.

Being new to making POIs I thought there was some sort of standard that would pretty much work for everyone's GPS which is how I wanted to make my file. I know now that is not so.

I guess making a POI for others to use is really just about getting the actual information to everyone, in the simplest form, so that they can manage it the best way for themselves.

Thanks for pointing me to some of the links above. I learned a few new tricks in EPE and the different file formats. What formats do most users like starting with, gpx or csv(columns)?

Now, time permitting, I just have to get the data into a file to share with the group. I think the Massage Envy website is showing over 800 locations, and I am a little slow extracting it.

Thanks again, another problem solved by the extremely helpful members here.
