Thats the only place I know of to get the different icons for our vehicles. I still have some of the x-mas ones in my garmin but I use the tank most of the time.

Hm. Yeah, I'm surprised

Hm. Yeah, I'm surprised there aren't lots of sites offering alternative vehicles for use in our Garmin's... Did they keep the file format proprietary?

There's a few more here...

In .RAR format :-

arrow http://www.alice-dsl.net/fahrzeuge/html/fahrzeuge_1.html

extract the .SRF files to your \garmin\vehicle directory.

There are 3 pages of them - click the buttons on the left marked:

fahrzeuge_1
fahrzeuge_2
sonderbauarten

The files found are "rar" and not srf. How do you load them? Thanks - I gotta have the Viper installed.

.

You have to extract them. RAR is a compression format like ZIP.

The vehicles are compressed with Winrar (http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm). Uncompressed the file into .srf and copy them into your \Garmin\vehicle folder on the garmin. Then select your vehicle option Wrench->Map->vehicle

So in the 3D/Route Up/North Up debate I'm guessing you vote for 3D, but only on routes with lots of left turns. wink

CONFUSED

How do you get the vehicle from rar to srf? I downloaded a vehicle, but I am a novice on the computer.

Thanks for all of your helpful hints

.

You have to extract them. RAR is a compression format like ZIP.

http://www.rarlab.com/

Unfortunately, I don't know

Unfortunately, I don't know what that means. I went to www.rarlab.com but don't know what to do from there. Once I learn something on the computer, I remember. I am a novice on the computer.

I am a special ed teacher, so I can do alot of assistive technology work with the computer for my kids hahaha

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

.

Go here ... http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm ... and download the first program. Then install it on your computer. Then run the program that was installed and open the RAR file that you downloaded. Just like with ZIP files, you will be given options to extract the compressed files.

.SRF to vehicle

You'll need an extracting tool.. similar to WinZIP. Here are a few, all free:

http://www.download.com/UnPacker/3000-2250_4-10408407.html?t...

http://www.download.com/ExtractNow/3000-2250_4-10038365.html...

http://www.download.com/AutoUnpack/3000-2250_4-10578583.html...

I use ExtractNow but all three (and others) are Editor's Choices on that site.

After extracting the file, place the .SRF file in your VEHICLE folder.

Thanks for the 2 replies.

Thanks for the 2 replies. Let me try it and I shall report.

Worked like a charm! Now, can I change the size? If not, no big deal. I now know how to do it. Pretty nifty! Are there other sights to download vehicles?

Tried the Viper, but it has

Tried the Viper, but it has a bug that shows part of the back end of another car when turning. The girls work fine though.

More Vehicle Options

There are more vehicle options that are listed in the topic for "How to Create Custom Vehicles". Check there for some more options and links to them.

Added a compass direction to Garmin's arrow "vehicle".

I'm experimenting with a modified version of Garmin's blue arrow where I've added a compass heading indicator. Its more work than I expected, so only the 2D view (i.e. "North Up") is done. Perhaps someone else can improve on it:
http://home.comcast.net/~rmh83/triangle_compass.srf

(sorry, but you'll have a 50-50 chance of picking the right one in setup, because you will likely have 2 blue arrow choices.)

The Viper car works fine for me. Seemed strange though when I was in a plane the other day and monitoring the flight.

con: TRD vehicle icon

How's it going. I was curious if you were able to download the TRD vehicle icon from the website. Its wouldn't let me.....

RAR vers Winzip

Thanks for all of your helpful hints

WinZip Version 11.0 and 11.1 NOW does:
"Extract from .BZ2 and .RAR Files"

No need to download from RarLab.com if you already have Winzip Version 11.0 on your computer.
www.winzip.com

Becareful if you already have a prior REGISTERED version of Winzip:

Quote:

WinZip 11.1 is a free update for WinZip 11.0 users, but not a free upgrade for users running WinZip 10.0 or earlier. If you're a registered user of a previous version of WinZip, please note that you are about to overwrite your registered copy with an evaluation version of WinZip 11.1. You will need a new registration code [to go from the evaluatin version to a fully functional version of Winzip 11.1]. Please see our upgrade page for more information about upgrading to WinZip 11.1 at 50% off the regular list price.

If you want to try WinZip 11.1 before purchasing the upgrade, please open WinZip, select "About WinZip" from the "Help" menu and record your name and registration number. This will allow you to reinstall your previous (registered) version, should you decide not to upgrade. If you own a multi-user license, please make a backup copy of your WinZip folder before downloading the trial version of WinZip 11.1.

I didn't do the last part and had a heck of a time digging up my old registration code for version 10.0. So I just purchased Version 11.1

Any new vehicles you created?

any new vehicles....

Can you make your own vehicle?

I have a NUVI 200W. is it possible to make your own vehicle from an image file? For example, the logo of a favorite sports team. I realize that it would only really work in the 2-D modes, but is there a way to do this?

More on Vehicles

Do some reading on these threads and if i am remembering correctly when this was discussed it gives you ways to make vehicles also amongst other topics.

One of our members created a program which creates the srf file. http://www.poi-factory.com/node/21690

To create a proper rotating image you need 36 different views. But if you don't mind a static vehicle which doesn't rotate then you can just use one image.

So you can create a static vehicle using a team logo or even a picture of your face!!

2009 FLSTF HARLEY DAVIDSON FAT BOY

I would like to add my bike to my GPS. Does anyone know if there is a fatboy out there to download?

Best I could find was a HD Night Train here:

Thanks!

Hey DaveMP, Thanks for that link. Never saw it before and it's got lots of cool vehicles.

I just checked that site for the first time in a year or so, lots of cool new stuff including a new version of my truck - thanks!

He's now part of my daily RSS feed

You DID notice there's an RSS feed on his site as well, right ? Tony once created a car for us - my beloved wife's Citroen Mehari. A classic !

F4 Phantom

I thank him for the F4 Phantom even though it is of a Navy squadron, VF-84 I think. I think it is great along with the A4 Skyhawk. I'll have to learn how to change the paint schemes on them.

He's even trading that secret with ya !

Did you see the two PDF guides on how to create SRF files ? Just reverse-engineer it.

Using a copy of your file, of course grin
