update

It is the speed cameras on I-95 being contested not any redlight cameras.

I wonder how much money was

I wonder how much money was wasted to put these in, then to remove them, then to refund the tickets.

I also wonder about red light cameras in my town - why don't they just spend a fraction of the money spent on those dang cameras to time the lights to be more efficient. If people weren't stopping every 1/4 or 1/2 mile then they'd be less likely to want to run the light.

Not just your town

I agree. I've been through many communities where they seem to like to make you stop every block by timing the red lights in such a way. Then they wonder why people are speeding and running the red lights. If they time the lights so there is a normal flow of traffic then people wouldn't be doing that. But those communities usually "plant" a cop car there just to make sure they get some revenue when people run lights or speed.

The key word here is "revenue", this has nothing to do with safety as I've seen these stupid lights or cop cars in stretches of road where there is NOTHING around for a mile (no houses, intersections, etc.) yet the speed limit is 40 and before the stretch and after it is 55. Funny that it goes back to 55 in a populated area. It screams "speed trap", as there is no other reason for the slow down. People slow down only when they see the cop but ignore it otherwise (town south of mine does that)

Info

Most of the cities putting in redlight cameras do not own the cameras/systems. A contractor puts up the cameras for a percentage of the gross. Cost to the city 0, profit for the city $$$$$. It is not about the safety, it is about $.

Speed & Redlight Cameras

Speed & Redlight cameras have become the new American greed. Wall Street has been replaced, at least temporarily.

The obvious activity of the local communities, Counties & States are transparent & the words "for your safety" seem an obvious mistruth.

The only thing missing is a rallying point for making a difference in elections, both local & state-wide.

Why don't politicians EVER learn honesty???

Refunds

This post made my whole day!
I was one of the drivers caught on that camera. I was in the middle of a whole pack of cars and trucks, and I guess we all got the same picture in the mail.I sent in a check for $187.
Now there is a chance I might get it back.
I really have no excuse for the speed I was going, except I really didn't pay attention and just kept up with all the rest of traffic. I made too many trips between FL to NY at that time and just wanted to get out of the car.

believe it or not, I had heard/read somewhere a long time ago that it was to prevent speeding. Only a public official could think like that.
