This is going to make AT&T

This is going to make AT&T really grumpy is my guess. I've never seen an area where Verizon doesn't have consistently better signal than AT&T.

that is great news

it has been a long wait

But...

Let's see what features/functions Verizon disables as they usually do. Between Verizon and Steve J. controls, there might be some frustration in the near future. I still believe Android wins on that account.

jumping ship

I wonder how many iPhone users will switch from AT&T to Verizon when their contract expires?

Many AT&T users are disgruntled customers since the iPhone was added to their network, biggest problem is in major markets where AT&T did not have a pipe big enough to handle the added data and affecting not only the iPhone users but all their cell customers, the system was plagued by drop calls or just plainly no access due to volume.

IMO while the iPhone was a successful venture for Apple it was a boondoggle for AT&T.

It's for certain they won't take their phones with them. Different networks, different phones.

I'd just love to dump AT&T...

Hi price, lousy service. I've hated AT&T for a long time from their poor support and over-inflated prices. So, teaching them a lesson would be worthwhile. I just don't expect Verizon is perfect either. How well it'll hold up under the onslaught of new business remains to be seen. According to Consumer Reports they've already slipped a notch in the last year.

Until Verizon and AT&T both run LTE - and Apple makes an LTE phone with a multi-band radio chip that would work on both networks... and then there's the matter of unlocking... smile

CDMA & GSM or CDMA ONLY - That is the question

My biggest question is will the verizon iphone be a CDMA only version of the current iphone 4? will it be a CDMA + GSM iphone 4 1/2 ? Will this be considered the iPhone 5? will June bring us iPhone 5 or iPhone 6?

If the Verizon iPhone is in fact CDMA + GSM (like their blackberry world phones) will the GSM be locked to Verizon (for international travel - like their blackberry's are) I doubt they'd be unlocked GSM (which would be awesome). CURIOUS.

.

• It will be a GSM phone, but likely on hybrid UMTS bands like Bell and Telus here in Canada.

• It will still be an iPhone 4.

• It will be locked, guaranteed. Hey, gotta over-charge for those roaming fees, right?

That all said, here in Canada we can buy unlocked iPhones from an Apple store outright. Pay cash, get an unlocked version. The US may be able to as well.

Cue Apple mavens in 4,3,2,1... smile

I doubt if there would ever be a dual phone, might have something to do with the frequencies, my best guess would be that the Verizon Iphone would not be cdma but entirely LTE, since CDMA is dying technology, the LTE roll out started in major population areas.

ATT is terrible in DC

I am looking forward to using my iPhone with Verizon.

You won't be using your iPhone with Verizon

You'll be buying a new one, the at&t version won't work on Verizons system. I wonder how many iPhone users are going to walk into Verizon stores thinking they're going to get their phones "switched" over?

Gizmodo had a good article why you shouldn't buy the Verizon iPhone 4 and instead wait for the next version.

http://gizmodo.com/5729273/dont-buy-the-verizon-iphone-4

I concur. It's highly doubtful that Verizon will allow early upgrades like at&t did, historically they're just not that generous. I don't think it's worth gambling ~$400-$600 dollars to find out. If you've been waiting a long time for this phone, wait another 5-6 months and get the LTE version at the beginning of its life cycle. You'll be happy you did. OTH, if you've got the $$$ to spare and don't mind paying full boat, iPhone the night away!

Impact on AT&T

The iPhone's availability through Verizon will definitely impact AT&T dramatically. The exclusive iPhone contract has definitely been a key player in AT&T's resurgence.

No 4G

Reportedly, the Verizon iPhone will NOT work on 4G.

Backhaul is key

Gary A wrote:

Verizon, as all cell services doesn't have enough 4g deployed to support a 4G phone. AT&T is rolling their LTE out but not announcing the availability of service allowing more testing and sizing of the network to ensure coverage and capacity. The primary issue isn't necessarily the over the air speeds, but the size of the pipes supporting each site. This is what happened with the I-Phone. Demand was underestimated and the supporting infrastructure wasn't robust enough to support the number of phones bought.

Verizon iPhone 3G only

Yes this first installment of the iPhone on Verizon is 3G only. More because customers wanted an iPhone now. I too would recommend waiting for the already rumored iPhone 5 to come to Verizon so you can experience it with a more sound network infrastructure to give you consistent speed and availability.
http://www.engadget.com/apple/verizon-iphone/

It's 3G only

CDMA, 3G... LTE to come in a future device...

Device Pricing is $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB, same as AT&T.

Data is an additional $30/month on top of your selected Verizon voice plan.

Pre-orders start Feb 3rd for existing Verizon customers - Feb 10th launch.

Capable of being a mobile hot-spot for up to 5 other devices via bluetooth.

No simultaneous Voice and Data

From ARS Technica article:

"There's one major downside to the Verizon iPhone, though: it's CDMA-only. "Why not go straight to the LTE mode?" Cook asked. "LTE would force design compromises we're not willing to make, and customers want the phone now."

Not only that, but Verizon refused to comment on when—if ever—the phone would become LTE compatible, and the company confirmed that users will not be able to use data and voice services at the same time—"consistent with other CDMA devices now." The company declined to talk about potential data caps or even plan pricing.

"It's all about getting it on Verizon," Cook added. "The customers who want it there will be willing to make these tradeoffs.""

Not me though.

Beware

If you're gonna rush out and buy the Verizon iPhone you may want to hold off on purchasing a case. Apparently the buttons have been moved ever so slightly so existing cases may or may not fit properly.

Simultaneous Voice And Data = No Big Deal

That's a non-issue for any CDMA smartphone user.

They don't have the ability now... plus, any CDMA smartphone user that does need that ability will already have and use other data solutions that do not involve their phones.

But what about a person who switches carriers? Those that have had the ability may be the loudest complainers over VZ's implementation.

Yeah, those people will squeal. Unless they're smart enough to do their research first, and Verizon trains its people to set correct expectations.

Simultaneous Voice and Data

From subsequent ARS Technica article:

"I don't get it: who cares about being able to use data and voice at the same time?

This is obviously a personal usage scenario, and many people who already use Verizon seem to have no problem with this limitation. There are some ways in which this roadblock can get annoying, though. For one, Verizon execs confirmed that the iPhone won't be able to get push notifications while you're on a call, so even if you're not surfing the Web, nothing that uses data will be able to notify you of anything until you hang up.

Secondly, the voice calls will interrupt anything you're doing over the data connection. So, if you happen to be downloading an app or using Verizon's personal hotspot feature to share the 3G connection over WiFi, receiving a phone call will mean that you'll have to choose between interrupting everyone's WiFi connections or simply ignoring the call.

These things may or may not be a dealbreaker for you, but they're important to keep in mind."

I know we've used the personal hotspot feature in meetings before on AT&T (Mi-Fi). It would suck to think that you could use it on Verizon and then find out you can't answer your phone without messing up everyone else.

It's going to be CDMA only, no GSM. Also, it won't be on the 3GPP Lte network (the fastest network Verizon currently offers)

Android

I don't have one but have often wondered about the iPhone. I'm a long time Verizon customer. Now that they are finally getting the iPhone I think I'd probably rather get a Droid anyway........ It figures.
