Garmin announces nüvi 2400 series GPS units, StreetPilot iPhone app

http://www.bgr.com/2011/01/04/garmin-announces-nuvi-2400-ser...

Highlights:

The 2400 series of personal navigation devices will come in four different models and offer a variety of features, including live-traffic updating, hands-free calling, voice activated navigation, and lifetime map updates. All four models will feature a 5-inch display, include Bluetooth connectivity, and boast several new software convenience features. “All models feature nüRoute with trafficTrends and myTrends predictive routing,” reads the press release. “With trafficTrends, nüvi automatically learns traffic flow trends to improve route calculation and better predict the estimated time of arrival based on time of day and day of week.” The release continues, “with myTrends, nüvi will, over time, begin to anticipate a route to favorite destinations as soon as the device is powered up.” The 2400 series is priced between $249.99 and $349.99 and will be showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show this week.

Garmin’s StreetPilot iPhone app features many of the features available on the company’s automotive GPS devices including, free traffic alerts, lane assist, and speed limit indicators. The software is cloud-based — meaning you need an internet connection to download the maps — supports multitasking, and is priced at $39.99. StreetPilot weighs in at a modest 7.5MB, can navigate both the U.S. and Canada, and is available in the App Store today.

Turn your iPhone to a Garmin GPS

The Garmin app is $40 and turns your iPhone into a Garmin GPS with up to date maps and real time traffic. You better have a good mount with a power supply to the phone if you are going to use it.

Looks like a very complete package and when Verizon gets the iPhone I probably would go for this.

NUVI 2460LMT

Thanks for the update. I'll wait for the NUVI 2460LMT model

I was kind of hoping that

I was kind of hoping that the Garmin iPhone app wouldn't leave the maps 'in the cloud'. If I'm out in the middle of nowhere and I'm trying to find my way back I don't want to rely on the fact that I -might- be able to get data.

Plus, I don't really like it hitting my data plan constantly.

older eyes, larger screens...

24xx with 5 inch screens look interesting, as do lifetime maps.

Really Slow

... not ready for prime time - really slow to respond.

... requesting a refund

iPhone, eh?

I heard a little joke about an executive at AT&T Wireless getting married.

I understand the service was great but the reception was terrible. wink

nüvi 750 & 760

Can't imagine

replacing my big screen GPS with a phone ap.

some 3G data statistics for Garmin Streetpilot

iPhone 4 - 3 G data statistics:

-load and zoom in 3x ~5 seconds load time each screen refresh

sent 434 kb
received 534 kb

-travelled 1.5 mi north then 2mi south: -1 screen refresh

sent 166 kb
received 466 kb

-totals 3.5 mile trip - 4 screen refreshes total
sent 600 kb
received 1.00 mb

... hmmm guess my data plan is good for about 100-150 miles (when combined with other casual usage)

.

FPichon - you may want to look into the Navigon app. My understanding is that the maps are stored on the phone so it won't use much data.

Thanks for the update

That is great news! I will check them out right now.

I Agree

Looks very interesting. Too bad I have a relatively new model already (Nuvi 1690).

Meh...

No wi-fi in the 2400 series? No thanks...

Phone app -- excuse me, a $40 phone app -- that only works when you have cell service to provide the maps? No thanks...

this is correct - Navigon and Magellan maps are stored

oops hit the wrong key

I have the Navigon app as well.
It initially had severe problems, but they are resolved.

The Magellan app suffers from outdated maps and poor geocoding. Most of my contact entries can't be located in the Magellan app.

Verizon Iphone

Sure hope it will be better than Apple's iphone.

No matter where you are "Life is Worth Living".

No smart phone app for me

I have the Garmin app on my Blackberry and it is terrible. Slow response and spotty ATT coverage makes you loose you directions quickly. I agree that if you want a better phone app get the Navigon or Co-pilot. I'll stick to the PND's. I love my 3790 LMT.

Verizon Iphone/ Apple iPhone?

They would be the same beast. Apple controls the OS, not the provider.

no maps

have to agree here... $40 is a lot for cloud service on maps.

I guess it's why I still use my nuvi for navigation, my ipod for general music listening and my iphone for everything else.

Garmin Nuvi 3760T and Mac Guy!

Free - and it is stand-alone

Currently have: SP3, GPSMAP 276c, Nuvi 760T, Nuvi 3790LMT, Zumo 660T

It's the network, not the app

I've used the garmin app on my VZW blackberry, and it's fine. It's the network.

The 2400s sound pretty neat. I may take a look at one when they hit the market.
