Do updated Maps include updated built-in POI's?

I am new to the GPS world, but I am pretty good/quick at figuring things out. I just bought a Garmin Nuvi 265WT. So far, I am happy with it, but I have one disappointment with it.

I tried searching for Toys R Us in my area, and the closest ones that came up were 3 hours away...even though there are at least 2 within 30 minutes of where I live. I am aware of custom POI's, but I don't like how they don't show up (or can't be searched for) the same way built-in POI's do under searching by name, or by category. Again, I also am aware of proximity alerts, but I don't necessarily want to use those either. I just like the ease and uniformity of "Where To > POI > By Name"

So, my question is - I am allowed 1 free map update, and was wondering does it update the built-in POI list as well? I realize it may not update (particularly) the TRU stores in my area, but I am interested nonetheless if it updates the built-in POI - and if not, is there any way to update the built-in POI?

It surprises me because TRU is a pretty big chain. Targets, Home Depots, McDonald's are all there, why not TRU stores? I will see results for these little Mom & Pop shops, yet bad results for stores like Toys R Us, and JoAnn Fabrics. Why is that?

BTW - I did download the custom POI TRU list on this website. But again, my preference would be to have the same accessibility as the main chain stores. I realize this may just not be a possibility - given a national TRU list was even compiled, but I am curious to know why.

Can someone please explain this to me?

In short, yes.

In short, yes, new map updates also include built-in POI revisions.

I searched your user account but you haven't IDed your location. Tell us your city and maybe we can check current maps for TRU locations.

PS--The new 2011.30 map recently came out so it's unlikely that your 1-free-update offer will be valid for the next update. I suggest updating now to 2011.30. What map version do you have now? Touch Tools/Settings/Map/MapInfo...

By the way, welcome to POI Factory.

POI updates

New map usually have enclosed POIs updated too. Problem with them is, as I see it, that they don't put too much effort to make those POIs accurate. Sometimes there are places that doesn't exist anymore but still show on map. Or those that exist for two-three years already but still doesn't show on map. I think garmin doesn't care about it too much. After all they sell maps in updates, everything else is "free gift".

I don't know what is source of POIs for garmin, but I think they just throw them on map without any crosschecking. That's why many of them are inaccurate or non existent.

So for some specific POIs it's a good idea to check this forum. There are many sets of POIs that will be more accurate and up to date, prepared by members of this site.

Yup.

This has all been covered many times in various threads here, but yes they get updated, no there isn't any good way to see what POIs are on the new maps (summary, etc), yes Garmin pretty much just passes on the pois that are built-in to the maps they get from Navteq, and yes Navteq has some sort of subscription method for businesses to use for submitting poi info and some 'business sets' seem better than others.

Getting the 2011.3 map now before your freebie expires is worth doing too, imo. (Although you can wait until the last few days to be really sure you have the latest, like I did, if you stay on top of the date!).

Pretty much why everyone 'shops' here at the POI Factory. mrgreen

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

Poi's

I work for a gas utility. One way of getting your local or frequent places into a list is by using "favorites" as well as "recent" locations. I use those more frequently than some of the poi's I downloaded from here.

Custom poi's

The custom poi's from here are always more accurate than the built in poi's. You can save the custom poi to favorites and they will show up on the map. Also its not that much more difficult to search the custom poi's. They reside in where to/ extra/custom poi. You can then search them.

@jackdm

One question you asked "I am interested nonetheless if it updates the built-in POI - and if not, is there any way to update the built-in POI?" .You can not do any thing with the built in pois.

yes and no

Yes new maps usually have new poi's but they don't necessary remove old ones either.

Thanks for the replies

Thanks everyone for the replies. I am in Orange Park, FL. There is a TRU in Orange Park and there is one in Jacksonville at the St. John's Town Center.

I was going to wait until the last couple of days to do the map update, but since a couple of you mentioned that the most recent update was not too long ago, I will go ahead and do it now. My map version is 2011.10.

If TRU isn't updated in the newest map version, it seems the "Favorite" route is best.

All of the replies were helpful, thanks again!

Wells RD?

The new 2011.30 map lists a TRU at 1972 Wells RD and at 4875 Town Center Pky, both within a dozen miles of Orange Park, plus another 55 miles SW of town, another 75 S of town and two 96 and 105 miles S of town, plus others in the low 100s.

All in all, my guess is that the map update you'll be downloading soon will have a greatly improved toy store POI database.

PS--before updating your map, you may want to read these forum threads

and

Although a bit dated, they give useful info for a 1st-time updater. Of special importance is the "Install Options" tab that you'll want to click if you wish to update the map on your GPS and also install Mapsource and the new map to your computer. Having the map on your computer can be very useful.

Hit or Miss

I've seen some stale POIs get updated properly, new ones get added, but as stated before there are some very old POIs that just don't go away. From my observations it seems that it is a lot more difficult for POIs to get unlisted than new ones added. For example, there are a couple of home based small businesses down the street from me that have been listed in the Garmin database for the last couple of years at least, but the original businesses moved out much before that. I can't even imagine how they got listed in the first place - this is a residential subdivision.
