After updating the unit to the lastest firmware, I was able to transfer poi files and then safely eject the unit from the computer. The poi files were retained. Nice not to have to just remove the usb cable while the unit is still showing on the computer.
Safe eject
You should always try the option of "safely eject" if it is available. Not doing so could render the files and card useless.

That was the issue before the newest firmware update that was mentioned...in order for the files to actually be written to the device, we, the user had to "just pull the plug" instead of "safely removing" the unit. If the unit (before the update) was "safely removed", the files were not actually written to the device due to a bug with the device write cache flushing. This was causing a ton of issues with users losing files which were not actually transferred to the device, despite the device being safely removed.
The only work-around before this update was to wait for Windows to show that the file transfer was done, then "just pull the plug".
In other words, it was safer to "just pull the plug" after the file transfer than to "safely remove" the device using the proper Windows procedure.

You can also leave the unit connected to your computer until you turn the computer off. If you need the unit because you are leaving, I would think you would shut down your computer as you exit the house.

Shutting down the computer causes it to flush the cache during the shutdown phase just like clicking on safely remove hardware and results in the lost files as described.
As was said just unplug the GPS when the download to it says it is finished (before the latest fix).
