POI.GPI File Issue

All,

I used POI Loader to create a poi.gpi file from various csv files and had it loaded to my Garmin 62S. I confirmed that the poi.gpi file went into the Garmin/POI folder on the unit.

Now when I execute a "Find" and select All POI's and search for a business that I know is in the POI file (i.e. it is in the csv file that the poi.gpi file was created from), it does not show up in the list.

What am I doing wrong? Why is the POI not showing up in the find? I have tried upper and lower case and different variations in the find but to no avail. Thank for you help.

Paul

Search only finds built in POIs

As far as I know, a search will only look at your map's built-in POIs and doesn't include any POIs added through POI Loader--unless a 62S operates differently--I'm not familiar with that model. According to your manual

http://static.garmincdn.com/pumac/GPSMAP62_OM_EN.pdf.pdf

the 62s can search for waypoints, tracks, routes, and coordinates. I see no mention of being able to search for uploaded POI locations. If you have City Navigator North America loaded on the 62s, you can search for addresses and the map's built in POIs, etc. in addition to those mentioned earlier.

I imagine this could be a lot of work, but if you use Mapsource or other program to create waypoints for each POI, then transfer the waypoints to your 62S, then you may be able to search for them. Maybe someone else here knows of a program that converts the data in POI csv or other files to waypoints automatically.

To find your custom POIs on your nuvi (admittedly not the question you're asking here today), you'll need to go to them (Where To/Extras/Custom POIs/"select the file you want to search") and then they'll appear starting with the one closest to you "as the crow flies" -- or if you select a different city, the one closest to the new city.

What about your 1350?

As best I understand from the 62S manual, custom POIs are not supported. However, if you move the poi.gpi to your Nuvi and go to Extras > Custom POIs as was suggested, you should be able to find your POIs.

.

The 62S does support Custom POIs, however, as noted above, they don't show up with the built in points of interest. You must search them separately.

How would he do that?

I do not own a 62S. How does one search for "custon" POIs on that device?

.

Typically, on the handhelds, it works the same way as the nuvis. The Custom POIs show up under "Extras".

The specs tab for that unit shows that it is compatible with Custom POIs.

And page 39 of the User Manual indicates that it can use .GPI Custom POI files from POI Loader.

But not a "Find" Search

Motorcycle Mama- I think they meant search as in "Find (name)".

And I don't think any allow that with the Custom POIs, do they?
They just show up by distance/alphabetically, yes?

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

.

Ok, I don't have my eTrex anymore, but on my Oregon, they show up if you go to Where To? > Extras.

You can search them by spelling the name.

They do NOT show up if you select Where to? > All POIs because that ONLY brings up the built data.

Ok -- I get it now, thanks

Thanks everyone,

I have been "enlightened" -- Somehow I thought "ALL" POI's meant ALL POI's as opposed to ALL "built-in" POI's --- silly me smile

I can search my Custom POI's by searching "Extras" as indicated in the responses above. Thanks for the clarification. This is a great group.

Take care,
Paul

Brain fade .. again

vervalin- Glad you got it sorted out & understood (better than I, it appears).

MM- As usual, my brain fade caused me to think that none of the Garmin's had any kind of search for custom pois.. but I see my 295W & 200W both do, and I guess my 765T does as well but it's in the wife's car.

I must have been thinking about my dark-aged Magellan Explorist 210 which doesn't, or (likely) not thinking at all.
