4GB Card in a 60CSX

Okay, I just switched from a 2GB card to a 4GB card in my 60CSx.

Never had a problem in about two years using the 2GB card. Recently read that the latest firmware enables the use of a 4GB card. So I have the latest firmware and I load up a 4GB card and away I go... not so fast.

It looks like there can be problems with using a 4GB card in a 60x unit, and from some research, a 76x series unit. The unit hangs upon startup once in a while and will almost always lock upon shutdown with a constant drone tone that can only be stopped by pulling the batteries. I'm not comfortable going traveling with this.

Sound familiar to anyone else?

Any ideas?

I've reloaded the firmware, done master resets, etc.

The maps I load are CN2011.3, Topo 2008, and Topo 24K National Parks East.

Probably not but just in case...

Where did you buy your 4GB card? Ebay and other auction and craigslist-ey sites have a substantial number of counterfeit and also defective higher-capacity SD cards for sale. I was bit on eBay by a bad seller in Hong Kong with a couple of these...at least they were cheap wink

If you purchased your SD card from a retailer in a sealed package, this probably isn't your problem.

Hope the cards are real

I bought the Sandisk 4GB SDHC cards from Radio Shack.

Garmin Tech Support to the Rescue

Well, the problem is due to invisible files on card. Those files cause the hangs, freezes, etc.

What is really strange that these files just started causing these problems after about 5 years of managing the 60CSx on a Mac.

We confirmed the problem by using a Windows PC to view and erased the invisible files, and then reinstalled card, and no more problems.

The problem is that these files are installed on the card whenever the card is mounted on the Mac. So using a USB reader to load a card with maps will also put these invisible files on the card.

I'm not sure if these files are installed if the GPS is maintained exclusively via a USB cable, and not using Mass Storage mode.

I'll be doing more investigation of this, and when these files show up.

It is strange how this started after all these years.

4GB Card

What were those invisibale files ?

I'd like to figure out what they were and why they were there.

Thanks.

.

My guess is that they came from the user deleting files from the removable drive while it was connected to the Mac.

When this is done, the Mac creates a hidden .trashes file and the trash must be emptied before the device is disconnected or the files will remain.

The offending files are invisible files related to Trash and Spotlight registry indexing, and maybe other things. There are about 3-6 invisible files that show up that have to be deleted before installing the card in the GPS.

Apparently, these files can not be deleted by the Finder, or at least I haven't found a way. But luckily, I have Drive Genius that can delete these files through Finder. So now when ever I load a card with maps, I view invisible files with Finder and delete them with Drive Genius.

Or you can pop the card reader with the card into a PC and delete the invisible files.

Why these files are causing grief after all these years is what is really bizarre. I've been managing this 60CSx for about 5 yrs on two Macs and never a problem until a week ago.

Invisible Files are there even if Trash is empty

Even if Trash is deleted before properly ejecting the removable drive, there will still be these invisible files on the drive.

If a drive known to be void of these invisible files is mounted, and then the drive is viewed for invisible files, the OS has already installed these files on the drive.

More On Invisible Files vs 60CSx

So the offending invisible files are related to SpotLight registry indexing, Trash, backups, and maybe something else.

I don't know all the conditions under which these files will be written to the card.

Before I eject a carder reader that is holding a card I that is being loaded with maps, I make sure that the Garmin folder is the ONLY thing on the card.

Since I have been doing this, my 60CSx has been very happy with no problems.

This is good since I'll be doing 2,300 miles over the next two weeks.

It is still a mystery as to why this weirdness has just started happening after all these years.

Perhaps a change to the OS or added features?

Probably an OS Change

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.

While discussing this with Garmin Tech Support, this is not a problem with the newer models such as the GPSMAP62s, since they were designed to handle larger cards. The 60CSx was originally designed to handle 2GB cards as a maximum. Apparently, the firmware change that was supposed to enable using 4GB cards in the 60CSx isn't perfected yet. Hopefully there will be a firmware change coming soon that will enable the 60CSx to effectively ignore these invisible files that get put on the card for OS purposes.

If you do a Google search on this, it is a problem that people are dealing with, and searching for a transparent solution. By that I mean I should be able to plug my GPS or memory card in to the computer and then disconnect it and go. I should not have to worry about a memory card that is "corrupted" by extraneous files that the GPS software is not designed to manage.
