adding topo maps to a nuvi

I have a nuvi 250 and up until now I've had a couple of topo maps that I got from GPSFileDepot on it, one on a 1 gig SD memory card and another in the available internal memory of the nuvi. I could select between the main map or either of the two topo maps (for different areas). I didn't have enough memory for more maps.
All of that has worked fine. But now I have a larger SDHC memory card, and I wanted to store maps for a few more states, as well as load a newer version of the map that I have stored in internal memory onto the SDHC card and free back up the internal memory. Here is where my problems begin.
When I transfer a new topo map to the nuvi's add-in memory card with MapSource, it seems to overwrite the old topo map (much as loading a new poi file overwrites the old one). Does anyone have a technique for preserving one topo map on an external memory card when loading another? I'm pretty sure that I can only load one at a time from Mapsource, since they are separate, independent and discontinuous files.
Also, I want to remove the old topo from the nuvi internal memory, but I'm unsure of what file that is. As with POIs, internal names are beeing used, no file name is at all close to the topo map name. I can take a guess, but I would hate to cause problems. I expect I'll just end up experimenting here, but if anyone has advice please pass it on.
I certainly hope that I can put multiple topo maps on the nuvi SDHC card; it would be a shame to have all that space and not be able to put it to use.

As with Custom POIs, when you send maps to the GPS unit from MapSource, the previous supplemental maps are overwritten by the new data being sent.
The solution is the same as it is with Custom POIs, send ALL the maps at the SAME TIME.
Newer units (not the nuvi 250) have the ability use use multiple .IMG files and support renaming of the .IMG files.
thanks
Thank you. That gives me some insight on it, but I'm going to have to work with it a bit to know if it is what I really need. That thread does mention a limit of 2025 segments. Not sure what a segment is or how many I have in all of the topo files that I would like to load.
I did catch the mention of the GMAPSUPP.IMG file, which was my guess as to what to kill on the internal file list. Of course, will keep a backup to be safe until I know that works.
I'm still wondering if there is any alternative technique, much like one can load all of their POI files at once, or play renaming games or sub-directory games and thus have multiple poi files. That should avoid any segment limitations, and also make it a lot cleaner to update any one topo map or add an additional map without reprocessing everything through mapsource.
more details please

Thanks. I have tried just renaming the file and that didn't work, but my 250 does have a lot of features that were not in the original 250 (more internal memory, multiple vias, round and not square on-screen buttons and so on), so I've not completely given up. Can you give more details on what does work on the newer models? It seems like it would at least be worth trying.

See my naming guide below (reposted since I could not find the link to it here). It applies to the 7x0/7x5 series but some of the names may work on the 2x0...all you can do is try. Note that the recent map naming convention (anymapname.img) only works on more recent models beginning with the 1xxx series (2x0 series is not included).

You can have various mapsets loaded on your nuvi...not just the basemap and detail map. These mapsets all reside in the x:\Garmin folder on both the nuvi drive and the SD Card drive. The nuvi 7x0 can access up to six different mapsets (*one* on the SD Card). The nuvi 7x5 can access up to nine different mapsets (*one* on the SD Card)
Example:
Mapset 1. City Navigator North America NT 2009 = nuvi drive main detail mapset (gmapprom.img)
Mapset 2. City Navigator Mexico NT 2008 = nuvi drive OEM detailed mapset (gmapoem.img)
Mapset 3. US Topo 2008 = nuvi drive supplemental detailed mapset (gmapsupp.img)
Mapset 4. City Navigator Europe NT 2009 = SD Card drive supplemental mapset (gmapsupp.img)
Mapset 5. nuvi drive Basemap (gmapbmap.img)
*Note: Before fiddling with mapsets, make a backup of them first, especially gmapprom.img as this is your main detailed mapset.
Here's a list of the nuvi 7x0 & 7x5's mapset names & their relationship with the nuvi
drive/SD Card:
Nuvi map naming convention
------------------------------------
1. gmapprom.img: (7x0/7x5) nuvi drive only, (primary mapset)
2. gmapprom1.img: (7x0/7x5) nuvi drive only (secondary mapset) example: North American / European units
3. gmapsupp.img: (7x0/7x5) nuvi drive (supplemental mapset)
4. gmapsupp.img: (7x0/7x5) nuvi SD Card drive (supplemental mapset)
5. gmapoem.img: (7x0/7x5) nuvi drive only (OEM mapset), user accessible, cannot be unselected from the unit via Tools/Settings/Map/Map Info
*Note, when using the following default system maps as user maps, you'll naturally lose their default map attributes.
6. gmapbmap.img: (7x0/7x5) nuvi drive only (default basemap), configurable as a supplemental map; rename desired mapset to gmapbmap.img, NOT selectable and does NOT show up under installed maps (Tools/Settings/Map/Map Info) but may be visible under Tools/Settings/System/About/Basemap
7. gmaptz.img: (7x5 only) nuvi drive only (default 7x5 Timezone map), configurable as a supplemental map; rename desired mapset to gmaptz.img
8. gmap3d.img: (7x5 only) nuvi drive only (default 7x5 3D Buildings map), configurable as a supplemental map; rename desired mapset to gmap3d.img
+9. gmap3d1.img (7x5 only) nuvi drive only (secondary 7x5 3D Buildings map), configurable as a supplemental map; rename desired mapset to gmap3d1.img
