HOV Lane Selection

question

My Nuvi seems to randomly select whether or not to route me on a HOV (carpool) lane or not. Is there a way to tell the GPS to use a HOV lane or not? (e.g. if I have more than one person or the HOV lane is open to all off peak?)

Although the HOV lanes run alongside the main road, the GPS guidance is important when the exit you need is not accessible from the HOV lane or for lane guidance to know which lane to be in during rush hour.

Avoidance Only

You can tell most Nuvi models to avoid HOV lanes entirely, but I've never discovered any other way of doing it. I haven't had enough experience to swear this is true, but it seems to me that my Nuvi (760) will use the HOV lanes when it thinks it is off-hours, that is, when anyone can use them. So it won't take me on the HOV lanes at 8 AM, but it seems as though it will use them for the same destination at, say, 11 AM.

Does any Garmin have this feature?

I was not aware that any Garmin units have a HOV avoidance feature like some Tom-Toms do.

Have I missed this?

Mine under avoidances show

Mine under avoidances show Carpool lanes that you can avoid.

Same on my 200W, 295W, & 765T

Never noticed the hours thing that was mentioned, but never really paid attention before.

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

I have it un-checked and have been routed to the carpoll lanes.

Checked to avoid.....

You have to check it if you don't want to be routed in those lanes. It's checked to mark as something to avoid. I keep mine checked as I'm generally traveling alone for work and can't use those lanes.

Well I'll be darned ---- there is a "down" arrow on my Avoidances page - and big as life, there is "carpool lanes" (and I have been there before because "unpaved roads" is checked to avoid.

I have it un-checked so not to avoid the carpoll lanes. Most times two people in the car.If not just move over a lane.

Hmm -

Min is unchecked too - but whenever I have been in a city during night travel - mine never notified me specifically to use a Carpool (HOV) lane. Perhaps this is also linked in with the traffic data and just ignores it when all is clear.

HOV Ramps

In the Phoenix area, and I'm sure elsewhere, there are a few ramps to and from the freeways that are built off the HOV lanes. It's illegal to use those ramps during the HOV enforcement hours unless you are carpooling. At other times of day, any vehicle can use them. So HOV avoidance can actually affect how your GPS will route you, and that's where I believe I have been routed differently at different times of day, as I have the HOV avoidance unselected on my Nuvi.
